To be smaller is probably not bad for them. Sadly people mostly don't respect trees. This always makes us to be sad.

I just love the horsetail family of plants 
As others have said, the colors in this photo are beautiful, and the tiny droplets of water on the tips of the fringes add an extra nice touch to the picture!

Since horsetails have been around for just about as long as there's been life on the planet, I guess one of their top qualities is being survivors!! They would look very nice in a backyard pond with some beautiful bright orange goldfish

We found they groving in a little lake (od bigger pond in the forest during one of our few-hours-trips.
