Description Saber-toothed Cat / Sabre-toothed Cat / commonly Saber-tooth Tiger (incorrect)
including all extinct subfamilies of Machairodontinae, Barbourofelidae and Nimravidae with saber-like maxillary canine teeth, like the most popular Smilodon.

Requested by ~Manchy007 Adobe Photoshop CS2-CS4

Why is the name Saber-tooth "Tiger" incorrect? Because the animals it refers to were NOT tigers: tigers belong to subfamily Pantherinae, whereas Saber-toothed Cats were several genera of Machairodontinae, Barbourofelidae and Nimravidae, whose evolution had no relation to the modern tiger.

Also, even if some saber-tooth cats like the Smilodon shared some physical traits and hunting patterns with tigers, they may have been social animals, more like today's lions than tigers and all other wild cats, which are solitary hunters and don't live in groups.

If they are not from Pantherinae, does that mean they are not true "Big Cats"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WishmasterAlchemist In reply to Blood-B0xer [2012-08-07 09:12:26 +0000 UTC]

Probably not, if we consider "true" big cats as the four members of the genus Panthera (tiger, lion, leopard, and jaguar), but a broader definition of big cat also includes other members of the Felidae family like the cheetah and the cougar, and since Saber-toothed Cats were Felidae as well, we could possibly see them as ancestral big cats

I don't mean to be rude, but can I just point out that there is not such thing as a Saber-tooth "tiger"?
The name literally means, 'Knife Tooth Cat'; they were more similar to lions if anything, and so the commonly used name 'tiger' is in fact, incorrect.

Not trying to be rude/mean/nasty, I just wanted to inform you.

WishmasterAlchemist In reply to CreepingBoNE [2011-07-20 13:10:52 +0000 UTC]

It's ok, I always appreciate constructive critiques and I actually know about the name discussion, which would make it easier and more correct to just use the name Smilodon. I've been considering this in the past but kept the common name (even if incorrect) because that's how people commonly refer to it... but I may reconsider it and edit the name to Smilodon.
I'll think about it again, thank you! ^^

True, but now I may have people nagging on me because I changed it so I think I'll add a little explanation, do you know any reliable websites I could refer to for providing this information?

All I could find was a wiki article [link] and this documetry [link] (one of my personal favourites. :3 )

Though I'm not sure if these'll be of any help. :\

Do you think you could make one about Not supporting white tigers, I support Tigers? Or something shorter of the kind? Can't really think of a proper wording at the moment. XD White tigers are not a species or something even of the likes. IT just goes with the knowledge of how many tigers are killed each year trying to get the white coloration.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WishmasterAlchemist In reply to ImmortalZImbalance [2008-07-23 10:44:22 +0000 UTC]

I see... that's a serious problem!
Anyway I can't think of a way to put this into a stamp... would it be ok to make a stamp only for "orange" tigers? That way you can say that you love only orange tigers and not white!
And then I can add something in the description to explain this problem with white tigers...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ImmortalZImbalance In reply to WishmasterAlchemist [2008-09-12 11:31:37 +0000 UTC]

Even something saying Support Orange, or something simplistic like that would work. Sure I would love that to be truthful. Sorry it took me so long to reply. Been in the middle of a court mess etc. Thank you for considering it, it just annoys me that everyone seems to support tigers but most of the images I see are of the white. I understand they're mystifying and beautiful; well you know how the rest goes. Thank you, lol more so for listening to my rants.

WishmasterAlchemist In reply to ImmortalZImbalance [2008-09-12 13:05:51 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry for taking long! I perfectly remember your request and I'll make a stamp for orange tigers!
Yes, white tigers are fascinating but honestly when I think of a tiger, the first image that comes up into my mind is that of an orange tiger... I think it is the most representative of the species.. and anyways orange tigers are so beautiful!
I'll let you know when it's ready!
