Long story short, the Avengers were formed around when Iron Man 2 takes place, but they included Loki and Faye (my OC, who has wolf traits). Loki and Faye became close before the events of Thor, which ends in much the same way as in canon. We get to Avengers, and Faye is having trouble because, thanks to her wolf traits, she has some wolf mentality too, and she's feeling torn between loyalty to her pack (the Avengers) and loyalty to her mate (Loki). Fearing she'll run off and join Loki, the Avenger lock her up, which she perceives as being cast out of the pack. That drives her decision to join Loki.

I'll warn you though, it'll take awhile to get to the emotional parts. The first part is more or less Iron Man 2 if the Avengers had already been a team with some Faye/Loki fluff thrown in.
