Becoming a zoologist (and an Olympic-level athlete) in college, Shanna later got a job caring for leopards at Central Park Zoo. But when one of her feline wards was killed, she left for Africa with its cubs. Staying in the animal preserve, she came to become one with nature and defended the nearby creatures under her watch from hunters and poachers with nothing but a fierce determination, a knife, and a skimpy animal print bodysuit. Eventually, she found herself caught up in adventures outside Africa and met Ka-Zar, Lord of the Savage Land. First operating as superheroic partners, the two eventually fell in love and protected the Savage Land as husband and wife, and later as parents with the arrival of their son, Matthew.
