Description OK, this is the last one for right now. This is also a tweak of the params sent to me by the wonderful . I called this "Spiral Shell Beads" because these params make great spiral, Nautilus-type shells.

I hope you like lots of colors, because this one certainly fits that description. Subtle, don't you think? Maybe a little? No, huh.

Made using Apophysis 2.08 3D Hack.

Orig params name: PW 4 Tweak Beaded Spiral of Rainbow Seashell from zweeZwyy (from Walls of Design Home 2 Apo flame).

Full view for detail (and you really have to see the detail) and download is 1500x1200.

I hope you enjoy this. Don't look at it too long, or you'll get dizzy.

The artist herself observes that the colours in this image are not subtle. I'll write mainly about the composition, and pay some attention to texture.

The main spiral is tightly wound, clockwise, with two beaded arms that are almost exact 180 degree rotations of each other. This 180 symmetry, which includes colours of opposite beads, gives the composition a strong large-scale order. The order is reinforced by the opposing spiral, which is loosely wound, anticlockwise, and less immediately visible: it is made up of just two streaks from the outermost turn of the spiral that makes up each bead. The opposing spiral anchors the composition against the urgent clockwise force of the main spiral, and (to this reviewer) there seems to be no overall rotation. The urgency of the main spiral is due partly to the form of the beads, each of which is made of a small spiral connected by a brightly coloured jet to an even smaller spiral that seems to be pushing the bead forwards and outwards along a main spiral arm; the pixel debris in the dark lanes between beads suggests that some damage is being done to the beads! Many fractals are a spiral made up of single spirals, but the spiral made up of pairs of spirals is a new structure.

Texture-wise, the beads grow looser and darker as a spiral arm winds outwards; the variety of colour within each bead also grows rapidly, adding to a sense that beads are dissolving, losing order, as they escape. The comparative brightness of the inner beads makes the image seem to glow from the centre, opposing the outward urge of the main and opposing spirals by pulling the eye back inwards.

Despite its intricacy and energy, this is an unemotional image. It's too predictable to be really absorbing. Certainly eye-catching, though, and well executed.

Richard, thank you for that very thoughtful and inciteful review.  I can't quite tell if you like it or think it's mediocre.  Sorry it didn't spark any emotion from you, but it is a fractal image that I created because I like spirals, details, and lots of color.  It's kind of my "calling card".  I see that you liked another one of my images, though.   I'm glad you liked it.

I like it very well as decoration. The thing is, DA also asks us to rate art for "impact", and I didn't feel much impact when I looked at it.  Less than with some fractal art, anyway. How can I put this ... it's beautiful and detailed, but not exciting. I've also seen art that is exciting even though its technique is rather crude. Both are worthwhile.

This is really great. I'm using a cropped down version of this on my iPhone as a wallpaper, but I get to use the whole thing now when I get the new 1080p phone I want!

This one is lovely thanks for sharing!
Its just so shiny and bright, reminds me of Christmas time, because you get those chocolates with the shiny coloured clear wrappers, but it also has a Magical fairground vibe

Thank you, Anu!! Yeah, I had so much fun with these params! I'm not exactly sure what I did with these. I was making shells like some sort of demented sea god, but then I think I might have turned one of the transforms inside out and this is what happened. I'll have to go back and check them to see how this came about. But I was thrilled! It reminds me a little bit of cloisonne beads. Do you know what that is? Beautifully painted and wonderfully detailed enamel beads. [link]

Thanks again for sharing them with me, Anu. I am having tons o' fun with them. I'll let you know when I post some more. I want to get back to my shell making. I'm thinking undersea type collage again, or maybe a beach scene. I have to use them in something!

The only criticism i could give on this awesome fractal is that the quality seems quite grainy, if i could be possible to sharpen it up or re-render it it would be perfect. Keep up the good work!

wolfepaw In reply to ZodiacMt [2009-07-14 07:17:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your input! I really appreciate it. I'm not sure if I could clean this up anymore. I rendered at 4000, with an Oversample of 3 and did a post-render on it and applied the filter of 0.6. If I apply any more filter to it, it tends to blur things together. I think it's that nature of the flame itself. I have tried moving the transforms around to crisp it up a little, but when I do, I actually change the spiral shape and I didn't want to change that too much.

I hope you like it anyway. If you have any suggestions as to how I could make this better, I'm all ears!
