Real fox fur tail that is somewhat poseable thanks to a hand-sewn wire. This tail can not retain certain shapes, however it still has a nice bounce to it when moved, even if it's in a pose. Has a metal loop at the end that can be used to loop on to a belt, or be pinned to you, or hang on a wall hook for decoration.

This tail is a massive ranched silver fox tail I bought from The Fur Trader in Nevada City, CA. Some people online have told me it's an "indigo" fox...though I can honestly say I have no idea what that is. This tail is about 20 inches long, with a maximum of a 15 inch circumference. It's easily one of my biggest tails, or at least a top contender, and has extra "butt fluff" on it (that would be GREAT to sew to a belt). Leather was good enough to handle me yanking on it with a thread and needle. The thread I used was upholstery thread, so I hope that it will not break any time soon.

I can not guarantee the 'life expectancy' of this tail, as I have never made one of these before and thus do not know how wear-and-tear affects it. However, even without the wire, it's still a lovely tail.

Here's a short video of it: [link]

This is so cool! Did you use wire? How did you thread it through the tail? Amazing

Yup, there's wire in there! The tails are split during the skinning process (they're cut down the length of the tail, rather than being left as a tube), so this it the process I use to make these:

1) Get tail with good leather. Any tails with brittle leather won't sew and aren't worth the trouble.

2) Get wire. I forget the gauge, but sturdy enough to hold a shape, but not so stiff that they are hard to pose. The tricky thing is getting a sturdy enough gauge that the tails don't unbend after some normal bouncing around (sometimes I would braid a bit of wire to prevent this, if the tail had enough leather for it).

3) Make a small loop at the end of the wire. This is so it doesn't have a poky end, and it makes it easier to start sewing. Try to make the loop a bit oblong/narrow so it fits inside the tail better than a true circle would.

4) Starting at the bottom of the tail, separate the fur until you can find the leather. As far down as possible, start stitching the wire looped end to the tail leather.

5) Going up the tail, stitch the wire to the leather. This can be one continuous stitch all the way up the tail, or just little stitches along the way. I've done both. The goal is to have the wire held in place.

6) Once you get to the top, make a larger wire loop (big enough for a belt to fit through). To make the loop, I make the loop then where the loop ends I wrap the wire around itself multiple times (think like how a noose looks). When finishing off the wire, make sure that the end isn't going to poke through the leather (I've always thought some electric tape or medical tape would be good to cover the ends of the wire with, but never tried it myself). Push the wire down against the other part of the wire so it's not sticking out and damaging the leather.

7) Now stitch up the tail to close the cut that was made during the skinning process, making the tail a tube again. I have yet to come across a tail that didn't have a split down the leather (usually people use tail strippers to get the tail bone/meat out). This will hide the leather side, hide the wire, and help ensure that the wire doesn't separate from the tail.

Considerations: Lots of movement on leather will wear it out. Adding the wire in there I'm sure only helps it wear out more quickly. Some leather really isn't suitable for this as it will tear or I've even seen leather that crumbled before. This can only be done with good, newly tanned leather. The wire can probably erode over the years and damage the leather. It might be a good idea to wrap the wire in something before stitching it to the tail (like electrical tape). I've never had the room to do this once I stitch the tail, but I've entertained the idea of surrounding the wire with a cotton batting to give the leather some protection from the wire. When stitching the tail closed, a baseball stitch is a good stitch to use. Make sure to keep the fur out of the stitches as best as possible. I strongly recommend upholstery thread or other heavy-duty threads.

I don't plan on making these again anytime soon, so if you want to give it a shot (and improve on my process!) I gladly invite it I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of this after all, haha.

Oh my gosh, this is the most helpful answer ever! I feel like I learned a lot! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this all out. I'm definitely going to try it with some extra tails I have lying around. Thanks so much!

I'm hoping to make more pose-able tails in the future Got two silver fox tails sitting in my living room right now just waiting for me to buy some wire, haha.

I can hold one aside for you The tails I have right now can sort-of be seen in this video at about 4:16 (near the end): [link] (wish the lighting was better! GAH!), and I'm thinking they will be for about the same price as this tail was, $35+shipping. Just need to go buy some wire, haha.

Ok, took me longer than it should have to get the wire, lol...but I finished one of the tails: [link] [link] [link] [link]

This one seems to pose better than the last one I made (probably because it's a lighter and smaller tail). It looks like it has the ability to stand straight up and stay that way if you can rig it to whatever it is you're attaching it to correctly. You can see the metal loop on my thumb in some of the pictures, which is how you may attach it to things. It's a beautiful silver fox tail with both black colors and silver colors mixed in ^_^ Even the people at the store were surprised when they dug it out from the rest of their tails they had in stock, haha (the lady who got it for us in particular said she hadn't seen a tail with that kind of coloring yet...which I found surprising, seeing how she works in a store called The Fur Trader...yeaaah, lol).

The tail would be $35+shipping if you're still interested. I take Paypal, money orders, or concealed cash. I can get you a shipping estimate if you note me your zip code (just not on weekends, 'cause the post office is closed, and I can never get an accurate price out of those online calculators =/ ). If you're still interested, let me know!

Yeah, haha, if I get another tail to sell (that has leather good enough to do this) and some wire I'll probably make another in the future...and definitely encourage other people to give it a go ^_^ Totally ripping off of the whole "poseable soft mount" idea though. But thank you

Oh, ok, so indigo is a silver mutation? Besides this tail and a couple others I've seen, I've never seen what an indigo fox looks like...I'd like to see the whole body, haha. Thank you for explaining that to me!

I'd say blue frost on that one; silver is the black with white "silvering" all over it, often with a white tip.

And this turned out AWESOME!!!!!! Nicely done!

(yay for messaging you on the wrong account, lol)
I literally JUST sent you a note for this, since I was talking to you about it before, lol. Sorry for that! But thank you!

And I'm not sure it's a blue...it definitely seems to be a red fox derivative, not nice and soft and densely furred like an arctic. The people at the store always told me they were silvers, which I admit annoyed me, lol...never knew what they really were! They make me think of a platinum fox, but too much gray probably, and too dark. Unless these were just REALLY really really really light colored silvers O-o;

I can say it's a blue frost fox.

Also, can I pay you to buy/make another one? ;3;

WELL, maybe I will now! lol I didn't understand what that mutation was before, but now I understand a bit more.

And it depends. I was looking at my other tail I plan on selling, and was thinking of retrying this with it, but then I noticed the leather wasn't good enough for it. So, if I can get my hands on a tail that's the right color for you and has good leather, then sure! (also need to find and buy some wire, lol) But if I can't find one, then I'd have to say no =/ Not because I wouldn't want to or anything, but just because it'd be impossible, lol. I don't have any current access to local stores that sell tails for now, and buying online could be a hit-or-miss, but if you had a tail that could be checked before hand or know a person selling tails that could be checked, then that'd work out great.
