Description Ex- New York Central 8255 arrived in Baldwin City on May 12 1993. The engine is a 1951 ALCO RS-3, one of only 113 equipped with a steam boiler for passenger car heating and has crew restroom facilities under the rear (Short) hood. It's a popular engine with railfans because of its distinctive ALCO chug-chug sound and black smoke. It is powered by a 12 cyl model 244 turbocharged diesel engine producing 1600 h.p and over 62,000 pounds of tractive effort and a top speed of 65 mph.

It is owned by Mike Fox of the Midland Railway Historical Society.
The ironic thing is that it works with Katy 142, which was repowered by EMD and one of the rare RS-3M's. The thing is when it was built by alco, they were about 7 number's apart.

HOW BOUT THEM APPLES!

Back when I lived in Western NY, over half the local shortlines/regionals used ALCO units. I guess you just can't kill a good locomotive.

if it ain't broke, why fix it. They run great if you keep them tuned up, so yeah, you can't kill a good locomotive.

I love ALCO units, Australia is still an ALCO holdout with various models still in service, as well as quite a few EMD streamliner styled units.
