Description Kurshuuq is the name the Tunit Native American tribe gave this killing machine that terrorizes a scientific research base 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

Why do we never listen to wise old shamans who advise us NOT to thaw monsters from ice?

Kurshuuq belongs to Lincoln Child is from his thoroughly awesome book, Terminal Freeze. (see it here: [link] )

I got the background from [link]

An interesting take on Kurrshuq and the only time I have seen it drawn.

What a wonderful monster Lincoln Child created!

I think the only difference I saw in my mind (so just my own imagination and not a criticism) was his description of its head being Spade or Shovel shaped, which I always envisioned sort of viper like.  Like that lion monster thingy's head from the Colosseum scene in Star Wars Episode II?

Still a great pic!

This guy! talk.turtlerockstudios.com/upl…  Yeah, I tried several times to get the head spade or shovel shaped and couldnt for the life of me figure out how to do it!  Although I drew this several years ago when I first started out trying to seriously draw, so maybe if I tried again, I would be able to get that head shape down better.
Have you read his other books?  They are so great, especially the ones he co-authors with Douglas Preston.

Yeah thats the guy. Still I really like what you did on your version!

As for Preston and Child I have read all of their works both together and seperate but the Gideon series and maybe the last two Pendergast books. I love them! Ice Limit, Terminal Freeze and Deep Storm aremy favs. Tho I do love Relic too!

I love the Pendergast books the most, he is such a cool character.  Did you know they just released the sequel to the Ice Limit?

Yeah so I am currently getting caught up on the Gideon Crew books since it takes place in those.  My favorite character in all their books is Eli Glinn so I have to read it!

I haven't finished the Gideon series yet, so I want to finish those before I read the sequel.  Got to do these things properly!

Hi, thanks for being possibly the only person to ever draw this creature.

I'm making kind of "Hunger Games" esqe fight to the death with creatures from various novels. Could I use this image? I credit you and provide a link to this page.

Thank you! This is a reaaaally old picture, heh. Sure you may use it!  Thank you for asking.  If you like creature type novels, I recommend "Relic" by the same author (and co-authored by another great author), it has this guy in it:

You're most welcome!

I too read the book, and I too just loved the monster in it.

I really like you're take on Kurrshuq, you're version is very specific and well made.I love what you did with his face, he look so fierce and wailed.

But the part I love the most is the DAMN eye, it's so AWSOME!

In case you're interested here's my version of him-> cyprus-1.deviantart.com/art/Te…

Yeah, i read the book in one weekend!  Have you read the other books by the author?  They are really awesome, my favorites ever.  This is actually a pretty old picture, I've been meaning to re-draw this guy.  I want to make him more cat-like.  But it's really great to see other people's interpretation of him, everyone pictures something different.  I like your version a lot!

Cyprus-1 In reply to WooflesArt [2013-11-02 19:27:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes I have and I agree they are just awesome! But Terminal Frizz was by fur my most favorite.

Ho you should totally take a second shout at him, and don't get me wrong the current picture is awesome, but I beat that you’re next one would be even better!

It sure is!  I think that's what I love the most about it; everyone can have their own unique view of it.

In the book the creature's description is so vague and lives so much for the reader’s imagination, so it's really a challenge to draw a whole picture of him.

And damn you’re version is really EPIC man!

Already started on the new picture! Line art and some primary coloring done now.  I'm doing just a head shot of him this time because I want to be able to focus more on detail this time, and there is so much detail on the face.

COOL! I'll so be waiting fordwe to see it!

A face pic would be great choice, I mean that is the part that get most described in the story+ it is the part that is most confusing and scary about him.

Anyhow good luck with it!

WooflesArt In reply to Cyprus-1 [2013-11-03 22:09:00 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I imagine the body to be like a tiger or lion build, but black, so I don't have a hard time picturing that.  It's the face that fascinates me most.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cyprus-1 In reply to WooflesArt [2013-11-06 11:57:14 +0000 UTC]

Me too! The body is reader simple and cat-like that is if you ignore the snake scales. The face on the other hand hold so many details that it almost defiance comprehension.

You know what we should do? We should totally introduce our different versions to one another!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WooflesArt In reply to Cyprus-1 [2013-11-07 04:02:14 +0000 UTC]

I forgot about the snake scales!  It's been quite a while since i've read the book.  But yeah, the face is hard! I'll definitely let you know when my version is done so you can see!

Cyprus-1 In reply to WooflesArt [2013-11-07 11:03:05 +0000 UTC]

Yhea the scales were quite a surprise, also I recall it had a snack like tongue. Ho and thanks!!

I myself read the book just a few weeks ago, and I'm stile hunted by it.

Now that I think of it, in the end we really don't know what the Kurrshuq was, but maybe that's what makes him so cool.

Didn't they imply at the  very end, that he *could* have been an alien pet that got left behind?  Shoot, I forgot about the snake-like tongue!  I've already done the lines and stuff and gave him a regular tongue.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cyprus-1 In reply to WooflesArt [2013-11-08 11:43:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah they kind of did, but who knows...

Ho don't worry about it, I beat it would be great as it is!

+ The snake tongue played such a small part in the creature's look so it's really not a big deal.

WooflesArt In reply to Cyprus-1 [2013-11-09 05:00:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah but sometimes the details make the picture! You're probably right though, hardly anyone will notice.

WooflesArt In reply to gatoespia [2013-04-01 06:25:44 +0000 UTC]

That part has always puzzled me because I'm not sure how to make the head shovel shaped without making it look really unnatural. I think maybe the ears sticking out make the head spade shaped.

I really like that one, did you draw it? I like how it looks more feline.

Eh, although I was really proud of this when I first drew it, I don't really like how it looks now that my skills have improved a little more, and I'm thinking of redoing it. I want to keep some of the main features the book talked about, like the tusks and spade shaped head and many whiskers, but make it more agile looking and stuff.

The huge, shovel-shaped head, covered with short black hair, coarse and glistening. The overhung upper jaw, fronted by an array of huge fangs and flanked by two tusks, behind which-horribly-hung hundreds of narrow, razor-sharp tendrils, like the vibrissae of a walrus. The wide mandible, small and set back by comparison yet anchored to the skull by a massive hinge of bone. And-most shocking because she had seen them before, at least a lifetime before, encased in ice-the unblinking eyes that stared back at them with a mixture of lust and malice.

Something was peeping out at them from around the opposite corner of the storage rack. In the brief moment that he saw it, Gonzalez registered a heavy, shaggy pelt of dark hair; a large ear, heart-shaped like a bat’s and set at an angle lateral to the head; and a single yellow eye.

the wide, spade-shaped head; the teeth that gleamed wickedly; the dozens of razorlike tentacles that hung beneath. It was the creature of his nightmare, only worse: he’d seen the top of the head through the ice, but the dark occlusions had mercifully hidden the hideous lower half from view. Although perhaps it wasn’t merciful, after all, because surely if they could have seen those dreadful teeth through the ice, those vibrissae that slithered like a nest of snakes, they would never, never have allowed such a horrible beast ever to be unfrozen…

“That’s hair on the forelegs,” he said. “Hair. And they’re too thickly muscled-the talons are too long.”

Halfway down, he stopped. Because creeping up the steps toward him was a terrifying beast: huge, feline, with burning eyes and sharp fangs and massive forepaws studded with cruel talons. He stood, staring, rooted by horror. Slowly, very slowly, more of the creature emerged from the mist: a lank, greasy mane; shoulders rippling with muscle. It stared at him unblinking as it came forward

I think That's it

Thanks, this is perfect!! I've tried doing a quick sketch, but apparently I'm going to need more practice. I imagine him having the tough, muscly body of a saber tooth cat. I can't decide if the razor sharp tendrils are on the upper jaw or lower jaw...what do you think?
