Description Much of inland Antarctica in the calidocene is dominated by dry steppe. Due to a combination of very little precipitation, often strong winds and it being totally enveloped in darkness for a portion of the year these steppes can only support the most hardy plants, mostly grasses. Very few plants are able to exist with a tree like growth pattern, a notable exception are the cacti. Cacti of many forms thrive in the defrosted Antarctica. Adaptations towards minimal rainfall and periods of dormancy allowed some cacti to grow truly huge.
On the bleached skeletal remains of a greater steppe cactus a bat closes in on a moth that had landed on the woody structure, this tiny predator is joined by Antarctica’s largest. A grandiose grumpgull returns to its chick it had hidden away amongst the fallen limbs of the once great plant. Steppe cacti provide vital shelter for anything from the smallest bat to the mighty grumpgull.
