Description The slaying of Scatha, cold drake of the Grey Mountains, by Fram, lord of the Eothéod, who later became the Rohirrim.

From Arda:
One of the greatest of the dragons to infest the Grey Mountains of the north. Of his life little is known, except that he was slain by Fram son of Frumgar (an ancestor of Eorl the Young) in the early days of the Éothéod.

His recovered hoard was the subject of great dispute between the Men of the Éothéod and the Dwarves of that region, who claimed the hoard as their own. Fram rebuked their claim, and sent them the teeth of the dragon, with the words, "Jewels such as these you will not match in your treasuries, for they are hard to come by."2 Thereafter there was war between the Éothéod and the Dwarves, a war in which Fram met his end.

However this dispute was resolved (we are not told), it seems that Fram's people retained at least some of the hoard, and brought it south with them when they settled in Rohan. The horn that Éowyn gave to Merry Brandybuck after the War of the Ring (many hundred years later) was said to have come from it.

Why doesn't Fram have a scratch??? Because, in my opinion, when you fight a dragon (sounds like I'm experienced ) you either make the first strike count, or die. Simple

This piece maybe could do with some more refinement, but for now I am happy with it. Let me know what you think!

Thanks mate. It is how I see most of the armour styles in Middle Earth. 10th century design.

Wow, I love this, not the least because it is a scene not commonly illustrated. Scatha is somehow just as I imagined him. My only criticism is that Fram seems to lack motion somehow.

you ARE a real dragon slayer ! you've got the knowledge for it !

As always, I love your style, the scales of the drawing must have been long to draw. It is a great drawing (the only point would probably be the character who seems a little bit too "fixed" ...I don't know...)

Holy shit dude! Wow! I really like Scatha the Wyrm in this one. Somehow i'd still expect a bit more drama. I'll have to be blunt to make myself clear: Fram looks like: god damn, another wyrm sneaking from my rear left! Where do they keep coming from? Well ok, I'll just pop it cold quickly so I won't miss the faire in town So the point is, that in my humble opinion, he doesn't look scared enough. And I mean, even the great Turin Turambar the Wyrm-slayer was scared. Ain't that what courage is - being afraid and still doing what you gotta do? As a piece of art, the way you've put them fight each other, is very dramatic and visual - both heads facing each other from the golden ratios (guess you call it that in english). In art this works very well, yet in "real life" I wouldn't actually feel comfortable to turn my back to dragon's claws that close. But as it seems to bring good results, I have no quarrel Man, I really like your style and themes. The tongue of Scatha really brings the eugh-effect. Good job mate!

woutart In reply to Lathron [2010-10-01 12:48:38 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry, I appreciate honesty, helps us grow, doesn't it!

I understand what you say. It was my intention to not make him look to scared but more resolute. As if not a chance encounter but a deliberate hunt, knowing what he would face. But you are right, fear is that most primal emotion. His stance gave me some headaches and somehow the sketches I made had him in a more intense pose. I think that is the issue here. I think I will go back to this, for it bugs me.

Thanks for taking time being constructive and all, means a lot! And happy you enjoy the piece We aim to please

How was the faire??

Lathron In reply to woutart [2010-10-08 07:00:57 +0000 UTC]

Know what you mean, mate. These kind of situations (battle against a dragon etc) are very complex to imagine - if you want "realism". How do you kill a wyrm with a pike? Would a thrust go through, or should one just brace it to ground and hope that the wyrm will impale itself on a careless attack? Is it all planned or is it just random encounter? Do the chosen techniques require special terrain, gear or movement? A picture is never just a picture

You shouldn't have asked about the Faire, 'cos now you get a poem

Ah the wonderous Faire!
Friend, you should have seen
the ladies tease, blond and fair
wanting to please, oh so keen!

You really know how to surprise, W. So far I havent seen a single illustrations of Scatha the Dragon fighting with Fram. The story and fate of this warrior is very interesting, not to mention how it's related to Scathas pillaging in Grey Mountains...

And speaking of those creatures, one could say that arrogance and over-estimation might be the main causes of death among that race... Dragon, who beats armies, wont fear a lonely warrior; so its easy to imagine a hunter, who's maybe having experience of hunting bears, waiting with spear for dragon to make the head-on assault. And you're right with the "one try" idea, for sure. A chainmail wont be scratched by rocks, nor branches...

Very detailed, like usual. Your way to draw sceneries, to illustrate environment, is extremely good. I can see the cold, rocky hills and cliffs out there. Colours add the chill feeling.

Could it be! Am I the first?? We love our never-before-illustrated-scenes don't we! Glad you like it mate.

We share views on the how-to-slay-a-dragon then Yes, he will be confident, awaiting the inevitable attack. Placing himself using his experience fighting large predators-without-fear. But I must say his stance can be a bit more active, needing the 'wwooowwwwwww here he comes' factor.

Thanks bro!

I think I agree with your own comment, maybe a little refinemnet, I feel the figure looks very detailed and fined in comparison to for e.g the dragons claws and spikes. But I think it's well on it's way and will look fantastic if you resolve these few small issues.
