I never thought Sakura was ugly the entire time I've watched the series, except perhaps when she went into rage mode. I think people who say she is are just rabid Sasuke fangirls who are pissed that she's basically the only girl in the series who has a chance with him (no, I'm NOT a SasuSaku supporter).

Sakura has always been pretty. Just look at those gorgeous, well-porportioned green eyes and that cute pink hair. It's so easy to see why she's the girl Naruto's so smitten with.

The reason there's not enough NaruSaku lovey-dovey scenes is because Pierrot Studios, the animation team behind the Naruto anime is full of Hinata fans. (They even admitted this in the omake where Sakura is complaining about the Hinata on a bicycle ending.) And since their favourite Hinnata likes Naruto, they add all this filler crap and shojo sparkles for her and underplay Sakura because Naruto has a crush on her and not Hinata.

Hinata was my favorite character in the manga (I don't really remember why though since she's the one character who stayed selfish throughout the series and never had any hobbies besides a boy)until I saw her in the anime where she was made into a flawless "cute" Mary-Sue who could hold her own in a fight even though she is one the manga's weakest fighters. I'm like "Wtf?! Hinata's not that fancy". >:/
