Description Waki was a male Eurasian wolf I fell in love with immediately. Look how handsome guy he is! Definitely one of the most beautiful Eurasians I have even seen, and believe me, I've met many.
I'd never say he was really old, so I was surprised that he passed due old age just few weeks after I saw him.
So the first time was also my last time with him.
What a pity.

Zoo Děčín, Czech Republic.

This is so sad. He couldn't have been that old of this was one of Lobo and Boja's sons. Is Boja still living because I always loved your old pictures of them.

he was not a son of Boja and Lobo (I am glad you still remember those two legends ), I think he was born in Croatian or Serbian zoo
And I am sad to inform you that Boja is gone as well... but she was really old

He easily looks like he could be one of their pups. I've been watching you on here for years so how can I not remember them? I would be surprised if Boja was still around considering you posted a picture of her at 14-15 years old. How long do wolves live anyway? Similar lifespan to a dog?

it depends, pal!

In zoo, they can reach 15, I think, but no not forget that alphas have especially hard life - a body of a female alpha gets tired after so many litters of pups and alpha males spend whole their lives defending their position
I think Atila was only 7 when he died - and he lived in a calm pack.
Lobo was maybe 10 - and watching him fighting with his own sons over top position was a sight!

In the wild, wolves reach only up to 8 years of age...

When you look at foxes, the difference is even more strinking.
A red fox can live up to 12 years in captivity, but if it reaches 4 years in the wild, that is really something.
Average lifespan of a red fox is 1,5 year!!!!

Yeah 7 really doesn't seem too old, but the stress would be very hard on them. In captivity, I know that wolves sometimes can be aggressive because in the wild, pups especially males will leave the pack around sexual maturity. Lobo's sons would have left the pack before they were to challenge him. Most wild packs are really just the alpha pair and their offspring. I wonder if the same is true for gorillas because the local zoo where I'm from has 3 Silverbacks and a few females while wild troops usually have one Silverback.

I wonder if wild fox lifespans are so short because they tend to get sick easily or if they are just small enough to be frequently picked off by larger predators.

sick easily, killed by people (hunters and cars), have some predators (especially pups)...

Gone too soon...
He really was a gorgeous and amazing wolf. Love the rich blend of colors in his fur-tones and those big ol' footpaws and his eyes... so piercing and fetching. What a loss! At least you got a chance to spend a little time with him though.

It's always hard when you lose one isn't is Woxys? I go threw my shots from the sanctuary and there are so many animals that I grew to love that have sadly passed on.

Awww, he looks to have such clear eyes too (sometimes they have that kind of glassy, almost distant look when they get up there in age). Shame he went, but hopefully with peace.

He's got all the beautiful colors of a wolf. Always sad when they die, but if it's from old age, hopefully he had a good long life.
