I am guessing the crossed-eyes are due to inbreeding?

Perfect shot, this is amazing, those eyes are so beautiful and so expressive. You did a wonderful job here.

I would really appreciate information on other animals in the same condition - 'white' lions, antelope, etc, just like you've done here, should you get the chance to photograph them.

not all animals have that condition. For exapmle the white gene in white lions and peacocks is first of all more general then white tigers (white lion breed and come in the wild by chance alot more then white tigers cause white tigers die due lack of camouflage)
alot of healty lions have the white gen and when bred with another one who has the gene it creates white lion. White lions are not needed to be inbred to create them. and they are alot more healty. while white tigers in zoo's are ALWAYS inbred ( maybe a very few rare exceptions) but white lions are not on the same case as white tigers :/ since the gene is more occuring then the one in the tiger.
not all white animals share the same fate as the white tiger. like deer, wallybies, lions etc etc alot of those animals have the gene 'stronger' then the tiger cause those animals can survive even if they are white collors, while with the tiger; the wild tiger is trying to kill the gene trough evolution ( just like black cheetahs, and other died collor mutations) cause it serves no good in their habitat, but humans are waisting their time trying to keep the collor alive instead of focussing on heatly animals and saving them by breeding them

White tigers are beautiful but the inbreeding needs to stop because it produces birth defects and the like. I wish there was a better way to breed white tigers without risking there health and livelyhood.

and the sad thing is, if they had been smart enough to try and find other tigers that had the gene, or another white tiger altogether, the population wouldn't have been degraded, it would have been, not an actual breed, but not a giant house cat

wow. O.o
i had no idea about all that.
I mean I knew about some of the inbreeding in the beginning but not about how they were more domestic than wild. Man. Thanks for sharing this info.

Whoa, all that is really sad.... I was completely unaware of all this, other than the coloring is caused by a recessive gene. Thank you for informing all of us about these creatures! Despite the sadness though, this is still a beautiful picture.

If we give them all the unofficial last name "Targaryen" I think we'll be okay.
But seriously, never knew that about white tigers. It's kind of sad, and all things considered I think it's the right thing to stop breeding them. They're still a beautiful animal, though.

Ironically, cross-eyed Siamese cats were valued greatly. Don't think it works the same with tigers, though...

actually, if nobody believes the information you have posted about inbreeding, EVERY SINGLE WHITE TIGER CAN HAVE IT'S GENES BE TRACED DOWN TO A SINGLE ANCESTOR THAT STARTED IT ALL.. I learned about this in the Wild Cat Sanctuary in Florida USA. They protect wild cats that have been taken from abusive zoos, abusive or unknowing owners who believe that they can harbor big cats in their yard and not know that it takes $50,000 a year to feed ONE big cat. And they find injured wild cats that have not met with humans and they put them in a rehabilitation center that is also located in their facility to help the injured animal back into the wild. They currently have (or what i was told when i went there a couple weeks ago) over 130 wild cats, and 80 of them are for show while others are put in far back enclosures for tours to not be able to see them, especially if the cats are injured, sick, not friendly around humans, the rehabilitating animals, and one male African lion that is about 24 years old and blind. They take care of their animals and DO NOT breed them, as they are trying to have as many empty cages as possible. Not just so they have space for more cats, but because they want the abusive ways against these beautiful creatures to stop. They have only 1 white tiger who was saved from an abandoned zoo with her great friend Cameron, so they stay in the same cage but never fight or "do anything with each other" while Cameron is protective over Talira (i think was her name) because she was born with part of her bottom jaw missing. While they also have some albino species where one had a tumor on it's nose and had to have most of it's nose removed. But guys, BELIEVE WOXYS! He/she is telling the truth about these animals and if you do not agree/believe, then you are too uneducated to even be looking at the descriptions of the pictures...

Thank you for the info, I had no idea about the origins of these beautiful creatures...
It's sad to hear that they were "human creations" but at this point I disagree with the banning project of North America zoos. I'm also against inbreeding but I've seen a documentary about an Australian zoo where they had a breeding program for tigers. They had four cubs from a white male tiger and an orange female, wich were not blood related (but I guess she also had the recessive gene). Two cubs were orange, one was white and the last one was a golden tiger! All of them had perfect health and grew up in 4 wonderful tigers. I don't see nothing wrong in this. After all, there are plenty of species that were created by humans (think about all dog, cats, canary species... ) but no one wants to eliminate them. Of course, they are not result of only ONE inbreeding line, but at this point we can't just try and eliminate them. Instead I'd support a healthy breeding program with orange tigers, in order to eliminate all genetic damage.
I may be wrong, but this is my opinion. Also thank you for all the details, I always appreciate your commitment for informing people! ^^

I think if they went about it in the proper way, having and breeding a white variant with another white variant would not be a bad thing... and by proper, I mean using two totally unrelated white variants that pop up *naturally* through normal breeding vs being specifically bred just to get the white variant. And then *only* breeding the resulting cub(s) with unrelated stock from other zoos if those resulting cubs prove to be healthy stock themselves, regardless of their color.
And if they are not healthy, neuter them and let them live out their lives while giving them the best care possible.

From what I understand, its a recessive color mutation and that it DOES happen from time to time in the wild (one in like 15,000 births), so it could happen via a breeding program.

ACWN-Designs In reply to woxys [2013-03-05 17:26:02 +0000 UTC]
Then how did they get the first one? Your artist comments flat out state that they captured a white male cub and brought it into captivity. That clearly means they happen, though they may not grow into full adulthood due to their coloring.
Sorry, show me proof that they don't happen and I'll believe it.
