Duisburg needs to be closed down, those animals constantly die an early death in the noisy, stress-filled, tiny bassins they're "living" in.

Very nice photo though.

constantly die? that's not true

ADHDnoJutsu In reply to woxys [2010-04-21 11:36:18 +0000 UTC]

They tend to die much younger than in the wild due to stress and bad water. Dolphins suffer from captivity way more than sheep do...

Most interesting:
[link]
They admit that the way they kept the whales was unacceptable which prooves that their trainer who told the crowd that they are happy, and that the animal rights activits were liars, was a liar himself who KNEW he was harming the animals for the sake of public amusement.

Three of many sources. Another source would be a short comparison between how they live in captivity and how they live in the wild. A bassin that is no bigger than a kindergarten playground, is to dolphins what a prison cell is to man.
I've seen the whales in Duisburg in 1997. My 80m²apartment is about as big as their bassin was, only that I can go out whenever I need to breathe and I'm not constantly surrounded by a horribly noisy crowd, the noise getting enhanced underwater. Those whales and dolphins are pretty much prisoners of a boom box, and that doesn't only harm their ears and cause stress, the vibrations can also harm organs in the long run.

I know that aquariums which have whales and dolphins are tempting for photographers however that does not mean that this way of keeping dolphins and whales, is perfectly animal friendly. The reason why so many zoo-born young get abandoned by their mother and need to be hand-raised is the same why dolphins in captivity die young: An unnatural habitat full of stress and devoid of hiding facilities (as they need to be seen by the visitors as much as possible), makes wild animals develop issues of both physical and mental health. A fox running constantly from left to right, is a perfect example. So instead of supporting these things by visiting them, one may want to invest in a vacation at the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef or other natural habitats where they offer dolphin- or whale watching/diving. They are more beautiful in their natural habitat anyway

I know abou this issue, as I am interested in dolphinariums for many years.
I read a lot of info, but in fact, I more and more consider dolphinariums to be a good way how to create relationship between dolphins and people

so I do not share your opninion.

By the way, dolphins tend to live LONGER in captivity in fact. But activists do not mention this.

I use to critize the dolphinariums, but now I rather support them.
I read much, MUCH more info that those three sources you sent me.
But I support the existence of good dolphinariums and the one in Duisburg IS good.

By the way, I have a new for you, which is NEVER mentioned by activists.
Dolphins are TOP predators in the wild.
It means, that they MUST TEND to die soon and they MUST tend to lose many newborn babies.
If they did not, seas would be crowded with dolphins.

So if acticists say, that many of newborn dolphins in dolphinariums die, it is PERFECTLY natural.

You will not persuate me as I said - I used to protest agains dolphinariums and dolphin captivity, but as I learned more and more, I started supporting it.

I have the opportunity that I only have to walk 5 minutes to the zoo to see these great animals. It´s realy sad that the zoo only has one river dolphin left and it´s very difficult to get new ones from a zoo, because only 2 zoos worldwide are ceeping these animals. Anyway, great photo (and sorry for my bad english)

Yes, the zoo director of Duisburg talked with Venezuela. Unfortunately the political relationship to germany is rather bad and the government of venezuela is not willing to give dolphins to a zoo in germany.
