Description Chun Li Wallpaper

Lineart:
Colors and Background: me
Character: Capcom

4:3 wallpaper sizes: (yet to be done)
Widescreen wallpaper sizes: (Yet yo be done)

sigh... didn´t touch the Chun Li since the last update... my wacom pen has gone M.I.A. (missing in action) this last few days... so I wasn´t able to fix her that much.

The background... well... I am not good at all at drawing trees... specialy Cheery trees (they are ridiculously hard to draw... and they aren´t blossoming at this time of year since it is summer here).

Feedback:

What I want at moment is your final considerations about the composition (between the character and the back gorund) and the color.

I won´t, probably, continue painting it (it has been a month now...). But I want to improve, so any other comment about this piece will help.

Thank you all for the help (Thank you all at GimmeFeedback!!)

Wow the background looks sooo real o.O Really unbelievable you painted it, it's so perfect Well I agree there's a difference between the coloring of the backgroung and the coloring of the character but I think it highlights her. And because she's a chinese girl (is she? o.O) she fits very well the chinese looking background. Good job!

really nice one and good work on the character!
the cherrytrees are ok, too. but they look like you cut and paste some blossom photos or used a blossom bush. it would look nicer if you painted them (if you did then please excuse me!)
i also like the waercolor-paper-look you gave it with the texture!
the only thing that bugs me are the clouds. they look good, but they seem to heavy for the picture. they draw alot of attention because they are very dark, contrastful and big.

but still good work! keep it coming!

Oh very nice, the background was a nice add indeed. I guess this is the final version of it. Overall it looks pretty good.

The paining of the trees look amazing too. If you don't mind me asking, how exactly do you do that? Did you use some kind of special brush? Same with the clouds too? And also I assume you used some kind of texturizer for the background? Or is that the original paper?

All in all, looks good, Chun Li's coloring doesn't really fit well with the background, I think the background looks way better than the drawing of chun li lol, but that's just me.

Keep it up!

I didn´t use a brush (don´t know how to make them for SAI). Instead, I did the the trees in a similar fashion to a brush (I will explain in the next paragraph). The clouds I painted manualy.

Okay... for the trees... well... I started with 2 petals (sounds crazy... but it isn't). I made copies of these petals and joined them into 3 different flowers. Repeated the process to create groups of flowers. Repeat... and repeat until you get branches... (it takes a lot of time to get it right).

Anyhow... thanks for the comment.

Wonderful job. This is quite incredible, and your hard work has definitely paid off.
Two things I really love:
— The contrast of the background and the girl. I really love the texture of the background, because it looks like real canvas (it's not, right?) and is quite beautiful, if that's not strange to think. And I think the fact that it's not there in the girl really emphasizes her figure.
— I don't know anything about her character, but I really like the bracelet thing she has on. It looks great.

Her face is pretty good, but I think her right eyebrow is a bit too slanted. Other than that, it's fine.

Like it a lot!

Wulf86 In reply to jonathoncomfortreed [2010-02-10 01:25:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... the background texture is made with three different textures:

- a paper one (need to find the link from were I took it).

- a colored watercolor one I made with come filters.

- and some stains I added (there are more than just the ones from the top left corner), yo give a little more vintage feel to it.

I'm using an older version of this wallpaper, in which there is the paper texture on the character (I forgot to save a copy of it... --'). That texture eliminated some details on her face... so I had to take it.

Anyway... I´m glad you enjoy it.

Now THIS. Is a finished piece! You did great job! I like the layout, the character is positioned perfectly. The different styles of the background and Chun Li bothered my eye a little bit when I first took a glance, but you've improved this a lot and I say don't touch a thing. And not only that, but full-viewing it really makes you appreciate the texture you used in the background and how you made the cherry tree.

Amazing job!

I like your choice of colors definitely. But I find it a little bit irritating that she is outlined and the background is free-handed. It looks like they are 2 different styles of drawing. (my opinion, someone could like exactly this)
I really like the background and you did a great job with the trees. Keep up the good work!

Wulf86 In reply to marchetooo [2010-02-10 01:15:58 +0000 UTC]

The background was outlined, not the clouds though, but the details were lost because of it´s size (because of the way I did it).

But I do agree with your opinion ( not satisfied with how both of them look together).

I really like this one, I think the composition works very well, in a horizontal shot with Chun-Li on the right leaving lots of room for the whole thing to breath. I like the warm and smooth coloring too and the trees look great. The only criticism i've got is personnal. I feel that the texture you applied in the background is too big, particullary oin the sky on the top left, and takes much protagonism. I would prefer something smaller/tighter. But it's a great work.

This is beautiful! I like contrast of the detail of the cherry blossoms in the foreground with the softness of those further back.

I agree that her colors don't quite fit in with those of the background. Try softening them a bit, they are a bit too bold right now.

As far as the composition goes, I think it might be a bit better if her hand and bracelet weren't partially cut off. I would prefer if I could see the whole thing.

Great job on this one.

At first glance it looks beautiful, but a closer look reveals there is a sharp contrast here. The old-postcard look clashes with her appearance. The texture is distracting and it forces you to look beyond her rather than at her. You did such a great job on her; she should be the main focus.

Looks very good to me - I feel the contrast between Chun Li and the background really makes her stand out while making the background an interesting entity in its own right. You kind of end up taking time to really LOOK at the picture, and noticing all the details in both the girl and the trees. The whole thing also has a very appealing 'beginning a journey' feel that fits very well. I love it!

I love it, especially the detailed flowers on the cherry trees. The composition works very well and I like the contrast between the fragile flowers and the strong character.
The only thing that I would change is the texture of the background, at least blotches in the upper left corner.

this came out amazingly. I have seen
the process this has went through and
can see your improvement with every
new enhancement. I love how you
turned this into a wallpaper because
this looks perfect for someone's
desktop.

I like how you emphasized the
shadows and highlights but softened
up the colours so that is adds to the
gentleness of the picture. and the look
on her face you were able to make
work with the picture by making a
rough texture and noise into the piece
without countering the soft essence of
the picture.

overall great job!

this came out nicely~

Re-written [2010-01-27 14:38:03 +0000 UTC]

The composition is good, character, cherry trees and clouds fits together very nicely. I especially like the rightmost part of the image, the contrast between white cherry trees and the character is beautiful.

I really don't like the background texture. It's overwhelming, it flattens everything and replace any natural texture with its own. Texture just makes the piece look a bit dirty (if it was made in traditional media, it'd look like a coffee was spilled over the canvas).

The artwork would definitely look much better to me without any texture, or with a different, bit more subtle one. The background is very nicely done (especially the cherry trees), so really don't think you should be hiding it.

Other than that, it is very nice and balanced work.

Actually... the background felt more flat before I added the texture.

I do have to admit that I go a little overboard with texture (... but that's really kind of my taste).

Anyhow... really appreciate the comment.

Wow, the background is amazing. And the cherry trees are really awesome and looking very good. The aquarellistic character of this piece is great.
And I like the coloration of Chun Li, too. It’s very powerful and it suits her character.

But I am not sure, if the two parts work well with each other. Chun Li looks modern and the colours are very powerful.
The background looks old and romantic.

I love both, but I think one style for both would fit better (I would prefer the style of the background because this is very special)

(and sorry for my bad English)

Yeah... it´s hard to paint the background for another artist's lineart. But that´s because of different ways of drawing. ^^'

Wulf86 In reply to Wheatart [2010-02-03 00:13:46 +0000 UTC]

Kinda painted them... I didn´t use a brush to do it... but I didn´t draw each leaf (I "digitaly" cheated my way out of making each one).

What I don´t like about them is that I don´t think they look like cherry trees... there is something wrong with how I constructed them.

Hmmmm... you don't think they look like cherry trees. Have you looked at references to compare and see what is different?

Nope... didn´t use brushes at all. I did an explaination of the way i did the trees for (last comment this image received). You can take a look there... and if you have any further questions I'll gladly answer them.
