Description So this is a relatively new project that I was thinking of heavily when I thought Off*beat was a lost cause. I'll probably still be working on it on the side depending on what mood I'm in. Sometimes I feel like drawing/writing characters a little older. >_>; they aren't actually that much older but facial hair in anime = age 30+. They aren't that old!! they just don't shave ):

They are two really different stories. this is the project i mentioned in a post as being a bit of everything but primarily a high fantasy gender bender. (my other favorite genre that i have a damn hard time finding something i actually like...sigh. I think I've just read too much stuff that I've gotten jaded~)

I hope you guys like these characters too because I'm getting really attached to them also T_T.

names with hair color xD;; i dunno if i'm keeping the hair colors. it's fantasy so i like to be playful but at the same time my original plan was for mundane normal colors. hmmm decisions...

Mayrune (green), Jethry (blue), Jules (brown), Griere (magenta)

I can't wait to see what you're cooking up ^_^ I don't think they really look old, even unshaven. I love high fantasy everything, so I really can't wait to see more!

Cool! Not enough high fantasy in manga. Though lots of gender bender XD ...But yeah, while in theory the genre sounds interesting/entertaining, in practice a lot of it kinda rubs me the wrong way. Too...zany and gag-ey? Hehe. Though a bit ago I read a volume or two of After School Nightmare and liked that. (Though that might turn out a little angsty/emo for my tastes depending on how it continues. Can't win with me, hehe?) Have you read that one? I also tried The Wandering Son which isn't fantasy sadly or even gender BENDER (just a sort of slice of life-ish series about a couple of transgender children) but it was just ADORABLE. But if you don't like the zany stuff either then that makes this even more intriguing! Looking forward to seeing more about these guys either way!

I think the ones that draw me most now are Mayrune because she looks...confident. And Jethry because he looks...a little gurmpy, hahaha (or like the more stright-laced/serious type that's going to get a bit weary of his comrades sometimes? XD). I'm not sure what to make of Jules since she looks in such an uncomfortable situation it's hard to read her personality by looking at her, haha.

Good luck with Black Friday. I work retail, too. *fistbump of solidarity*

Love these designs and the gorgeous shades of green. I, for one, am totally all for gender bender high fantasy. (Not to mention older -- even if only slightly -- characters. Sometimes it's just nice to be able to fangirl characters that AREN'T like half my age. ;D)

sweet~ ^o^ hehe i know what you mean. i was drawing the offbeat boys in their underwear and thinking...>_>;; huh this feels a bit more wrong drawing this now then it did 10 years ago...they are so young!!!
btw i have trouble finding any gender bender fantasy that i actually like D: comics, novels, w/e. i guess i'm not a huge fan of perverted loser guy gets turned into hot chick with big boobs and has everyone trying to rape him/her type stuff >_>; nor am i into girl dresses up like an extremely feminine guy for an extremely stupid reason and fools people for about 1 chapter before getting some guy/s to fall in love with her. no offense to people who like that stuff of course...

I had a couple "Crap, I'm old enough to be Tory's mother!" moments there myself. (Okay, that's only how old I am NOW. Back when the story took place I wouldn't have been. Y...ep.)

And honestly, I have yet to find an actual gender bender fantasy series I like either (though I have seen some good fanfic/art explorations of gender bending/swapping and such). It's frustrating because it's such an interesting idea in concept, and there's so much you can DO with it... like I always wanted to see a GBF that paid more attention to exploring gender identity and the factors that shape it, for one. But in practice, like you said, we mostly just get the same predictable fetishes and tropes every time.

And that is why it would be awesome to see YOUR take on it.

i've also found that i generally prefer the GBF in novels/written prose as well. have any recommendations?

killingcomb In reply to wulfmune [2011-11-26 05:27:46 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmm, nothing in the fantasy genre comes to mind, unfortunately. (Come to think of it, it's been a while since I've read anything that could really be called fantasy...)

But if you like historical fiction, I'm pretty fond of Sarah Waters' Tipping the Velvet. It's a coming-of-age story that begins with a girl in 1890s England falling in love with a female cross-dressing music hall performer. One review I read described it as a "bawdy lesbian picaresque novel," if that gives you any idea. XD It's vibrant and fun (mostly. The protagonist's life has a lot of ups and downs) and there is plenty of gender bending and exploration of gender identity.

Also, sorry for taking so long to get back to you! D: I've been sick and kinda lost track of things online.

and i hope you feel better. i've been sick for the last couple days too. although today my fever broke i was able to get out of bed. just well enough to go to work XP

killingcomb In reply to wulfmune [2011-11-27 23:05:12 +0000 UTC]

It's quite a romp. Sarah Waters' other books are also really good (Fingersmith is actually my favorite of hers), but I'm pretty sure Tipping the Velvet is the only one with gender bending. (It's also by far the porniest, heh.)

And thanks! I hope you feel better soon too.

I'm really liking all the character designs here! Especially Griere. He is intriguing me with his awesome hair and his awesome branch. Ad Mayrune is intriguing me with her name and her sweet outfit. And then I just feel bad for Jules being all squished in the middle there. D:

Man, I love the way you use color. This all just looks so bright and exciting.

Jethry has some seriously sexy eyes and I love the jawline to Griere and Jules in the middle is cute. I get the feeling Mayrune is one tough cookie. They're neat!

If Off*Beat really a lost cause?

off*beat is NOT a lost cause. I was just working on this stuff when i thought it was. which means for a few years ^_^;; sorry i didn't mean to be confusing.

I kept recropping this picture so that the three colors in Jethry's yellow/pink/blue eyes would show. Its my favorite part of him :3 Mayrune is a pretty tough cookie. she's older than she looks.

Jules & Griere look very interesting... especially Griere, with the branch, interesting! I love your other work... Terrabrand, Terry Smith (<3) , Nole the Naga... lol. You have such an array of interesting and cute characters that have depth! Love seeing more!!!

wulfmune In reply to wonder1440 [2011-11-14 08:41:02 +0000 UTC]

I probably shouldn't have drawn Jules making such a funny face ( not even sure if people can tell she's a girl here) but I couldn't help myself given the context of her surroundings. Glad you find her interesting though, because she's meant to be very plain looking.
Griere is one of those characters that I felt eh about for a long time, his personality kept changing. Since I've settled on this design though I like him a lot more. He's got some huge flaws (something related to the branch actually) and I love flawed characters.

We are all flawed, so you have realistic characters

Jules may be plain looking but her personality seems to be anything but !

New characters = new love!

Also, I don't want to sound like I'm beating a dead horse here, but you said "when you thought" O*B was a lost cause. Does that mean you no longer think it is?!?!

...Or am I being a stupid Grammar Nazi? >.>;

Since TokyoPop has been having troubles and closed the North American publishing division, does that do anything to affect your rights to the story? Is there someone you can talk to about the idea of selling access to the third book as an online comic, so they won't have to worry about printing it? It could even be a limited-time availability, if they're worried about something like bandwidth. It's just that none of us have given up on the mythical quest to read the last piece of the best series ever!

Yes, Off*beat is NOT a lost cause. Not to me anyway. I am waiting to hear back about some stuff and have some things I need to discuss with some people on how I plan on going forward with it but I should be writing a journal update strictly about the status of OB around this weekend.

Hmm, good question. I'm curious about all of them

But if I had to pick, it would either be Jules because her clothes aren't color-coordinated with everyone else (I have a hunch there's a juicy reason lol)

or Jethry with his sexy sexy mysterious eyes *fangirl swoon*

I'll be honest. Offbeat is NOT a lost cause. The plot of the whole world feedback loop has my friend interested. And he HATES lovey dovey stuff. You've got a good plot for it to go anywhere. Have faith in it.

And on another topic, this looks pretty good. I like the person in the middle stressing over nothing. XD
