The long battle to get her legs under her had taken its toll, both in energy and time. If she'd had a little more play in her arms it would have gone much more quickly, but her limbs were wrapped hard around the unforgiving wooden pillar, and she'd had to do most of the work with her legs alone. Finally standing with her heels pressed against the stairway-support beam, Cody trembled with weariness, sweating despite the cold water all around her. She almost felt like crying, not sure she had the strength to push herself up any farther even with the post supporting her back. But as a chill wave washed back from the wall to her left and sloshed across her chin and cheek, she knew she would have to find the strength, and pressed upward with a muffled groan...
