I agree, I love the way the lines in the boardwalk lead your eyes, especially in the middle, but I especially love how it goes to that pole (i'm not quite sure what to call it) and its a little off center. it makes it far more interesting.

Whatever your eye is lead to is called the "focal point." So, like you observed, the pole is the focal point because the boardwalk leads to it, and it's artistically interesting because it disrupts the symmetry.

Lovely shot. I love the overall composition - in particular the way the boarwalk leads the eye up to the centre of the image
