Model: Joe C.This series is vaguelly based off Diane Arbus's photo of a drag queen in curlers. I, however, put it in my own style which is a little more dolled up and beautiful with the utmost respect twords the reality in her pictures. This second picture, admittedly, varied far away from her style, but it was still an influence on it.

This is beautiful.
I love the duplicity and the merging of gender expectations in this. The way you've made the feminine ideal of cosmetics and beauty products seem so masculine by the sloppy application of the polish and the harshness of the eye make-up is beautiful.
And those eyes! The intensity and the heat in that stare, I'm being scalded just looking at it.
And I love the smear of nail polish down the hand, it almost looks like blood, which gives a rough masculine edge to the feminine adornments of the model.
It's all beautifully set up and shot.
You should be very proud.

I haven't decided exactly how I feel about this piece yet. Artistically and critically it is amazing for what you were trying to portray. I read your notes. I previously had no knowledge of the artist or photograph you were basing this on so I couldn't really give you any honest opinion about it. After doing my research on the artists style and on the specific picture this was based off of I find your vision for it wonderful. They are very closely related, but I clearly understand that you weren't trying to produce the same image. You used Diane's piece to give you a great strong base for a totally different more modern photograph that is all your own. While I think black and white would work for this I like the choice to leave it color. Like I said, it makes the picture more modern and the boldness of the red, especially the smeared part and tacky painted nails gives your model that flamboyantly "drag queen" attitude. It's perfect. <3
Oh and hah I guess doing that I decided I really enjoyed it.

breathtaking is all I can say! The eyes and nails pop out and really make it a powerful photo from the start, and when you analyze it further, you see the imperfections such as the dirt and lipstick stain on the hand that really adds character. Superb work!

i thought that at first but i think the reds are so like...THERE that they draw the viewers attention away from the actual meaning of the picture. i mean you still see a man dressed like a woman smoking a cigarette but its like RED NAILS and a guy in a RED DRESS smoking a cigarette...i like bold colors but i like it when they dominate it in a not so over powering way...i dont know in the B&W i looked at him not the colors... whihc i think is the whole point of the picture....but its all a matter of opinion!!!

I really like the lighting on this. It's dark and moody, but still bright enough to see the whole image.

He has wonderful eyes, I would have loved to have seen a picture with the cigarette alight and maybe some smoke.
But in your image I really love his painted nails. I like how he is not overly 'dolled up' the make up use is mild yet effective.

Later in the shoot we did it with a lit ciggarette, but these two were still my favorites, so against my better judgement, I chose the ones with better quality.
