I usually check this tutorial when it comes to erasing a background while trying to keep hairs intact. It's based on a hipass filter, i.e. sharpens differences and transitions. There might be a hipass filter available as a plugin now so it's worth giving it a try IMHO.

Kudos on the tutorial!! You explained the steps very well. I know you were limited on the space for the information, but the 9 - 10 pix type is very hard to read. I got out a magnifying glass and accidentally burned a llama icon. Lololol.
