Well, her motives as a villain were ridiculous and senseless, and while I do think her character now is kind, I've always hated how much protagonism she's recieved in the seasons 6 & 7 (I think it was those seasons, I don't remember, it's been a long time since I've watched MLP), it was excesive. It felt like the Mane six were no more the main characters, but that random villain who turned good.

She founded a village where everypony has the same cutie mark so that nopony would have to go through what she did. She probably wanted to remove her mark but couldn't because she needed to be able to cast the spell.

She's not aΒ random villain who turned good. She's random pony who's just misunderstand.

She's a random villain who turned good. She enslaved an entire city because her old friend "abandoned" her because he got his CM. She then tried to destroy the friendship of those who stopped her villanous acts, turning good as a consequence of seeing what her time-traveling actions were doing.Β

That's not even what happened. The way the village Ponies talk it's clear most of them believe Starlight's worldview. Not to mention as far as they know Starlight is equalized too, so it can't be her that they fear. And that "prison" looks an awful lot like a regular room that was hastily converted.

They talk and act like they're afraid of their peers. They have no reason to fear just Starlight since, as far as they know, she's equal with each of them. Meaning just two of them could overpower her, and Starlight wouldn't be able to without revealing that she's not equalized.
That room qualifies as a prison. Regardless it looks hastily converted, meaning it's probably the first time she's done that.

Because they were afraid of their peers. The French Revolution is not a good comparison. As far as they know everypony is equal in strength, and Starlight's just one Pony with no royal guard.
People refer to things they're trapped in as prisons all the time.
