give me anger, pleasea heaping, steaming plateful
smothered in butter, drowned in salt
splattered together with bubbling oil
wrinkled, burnt, charred to a crisp
mountains of fat and sodium
and delicious, mouthwatering calories.
give me jealousy, on the double
twisted, suspicious servings
of rotten potatoes and curdled milk
moldy bread long stale with distrust
dirty plates smashed on stained wallpaper
crumbs strewn across linoleum
in a burst of ravenous passion.
give me despair, if you please
sad little clumps of cold chicken and rice
bittersweet soup, taste of salty tears
bland crackers devoid of spice
half eaten, lukewarm, poked and prodded
cooled with a fat free sigh
when the eyes are more hungry than the stomach.
give me pain, and make it quick
mutated, mangled pasta and peas
chewed up, spit out, in contempt
splattered and strewn across porcelain
poked, prodded, ripped apart
pleasure in mutilating carbohydrates
an unsettling crime scene, not a bite swallowed.
give me nothing, if you must
a barren plate
white desert of fine china
empty glass
shining silver spoon
washed napkin folded like a swan
nothing but a growling stomach and time.
just don't give me hope
smell of anticipation mingled with ripe tomatoes
garnished with fresh parsley, ground pepper hiding
eating first with starved eyes and watering mouths
seasoned with distinct spices of possibility
twirling heaven beneath the tines of a fork
calories in the first bite are easiest to forget.
don't give me hope
because once I taste it
I'll never eat anything else.

Oh, on a quick read--would it sound better to say "once I've tasted it"? Ergh...never mind. Brain is dead.
