As one of the members of the original Blackflame Six, Shadow was known for his unwavering loyalty to the clan and followed all of his orders without question. He was the grandson of Iron Claw, the Alpha male before Thanatos. However, he has no memory of his grandfather as he was too young to remember at the time of his death. He got his name by frequently and effectively hiding in the shadows of trees and such while playing with his fellow toddlers as a Riolu. Compared to the other five members of the Blackflame Six, Shadow had no unusual physical characteristics. Placing the interests of his clan before everything else, Shadow took part in the mass genocide of the Lucario clans of Hoenn under the orders of Thanatos.

As a member of the Blackflame clan, Shadow was charged with assassinating traitors of the clan who broke the policies of Thanatos after defecting. He was also a superb hunter. But while he was blindly loyal to his clan, Shadow held his father in high respect after he nearly perished from a last-ditch attack from a vicious traitor who intended to slaughter the clan in their sleep. And the attack had been aimed at him and his mother. While his father made a full recovery, the spike on his chest had been torn free from him. As a constant reminder of what his father did for him, Shadow keeps his father's chest spike with him at all times.

As a member of the Blackflame Six, Shadow is able to mold his Aura into a unique weapon. In his case, it is the Aura Shuriken. The Aura Shurikens he throws lack physical mass, so they are completely silent as they fly through the air, making them ideal stealth weapons. He can even make and throw them very quickly, allowing him to send an entire swarm of them at his opponent in difficult battles. He can even make them curve in flight to strike opponents that attempt to dodge or hide from them. Lastly, he can adjust the size of the Aura Shurikens he throws, from small ones that can fit in the palm of his hand, to massive shuriken that can cause terrible damage if they hit. But along with his great skill in stealth combat, Shadow has solid close-combat abilities, making him a threat from any range.

Shadow's blind loyalty to his clan came to a sudden end when he attempted to assassinate the former member of the Blackflame clan known as Ruby when he discovered that she had mated with an outsider and even had a child with it. His support of Thanatos' policies was made evident when he called Ruby "that no self-esteem runt" when she boldly demanded that he reveal himself when she felt his presence. While her lover, Ash Ketchum, was able to fend off Shadow with the aid of his Torkoal, Shadow refused to give in after being fried by a potent Heat Wave, claiming that he had never failed in his duties before. He then fired a deadly Aura Sphere, also referred to as the Hadoken, at Ruby directly as she stood off at the sidelines. But when the smoke cleared, it was revealed that Ash had thrown himself in front of Ruby to protect her. As Ruby and her daughter tearfully tried to help Ash regain consciousness, Shadow's memories of his father protecting him and his mother resurfaced. Shadow then grabbed Ash and carried him back to the nearest city, Lilycove City, to get him medical attention. After Ruby and her companions caught up with him, Shadow revealed that Ash had survived and tearfully apologized to Ruby for his actions before leaving them. A short while later, Shadow returned to his clan and claimed that he was forced to completely destroy Ruby, explaining why he did not return with her corpse. Afterward, he left his clan behind, claiming that he wanted to live as a loner. From then on, the Blackflame Six was renamed the Blackflame Five.

Wishing to atone for his crimes, Shadow tracked down Ruby as she was gathering wild berries for Ash while recovering from his injuries. Of course, Ruby was absolutely furious that Shadow would show himself to her and brutally assaulted him until he dropped to his knees to show he had no intention of fighting her. After convincing her that he understood the pain of nearly losing someone precious, Shadow gave Ruby a small pouch of rare and nutritious berries that would help speed up Ash's recovery. But Ruby was not entirely convinced of Shadow's reformation and dragged him back to the Pokemon Center that Ash was resting in by his tail.

After Ruby removed Sapphire from Ash's room, Shadow slipped in through a window and explained that he meant no harm. Although Shadow did not expect Ash to forgive him, he claimed that he only wished to help him. Ash then proved to Shadow that he did not hold a grudge against him by giving him a hug. Wishing to protect him, Shadow requested that Ash become his Trainer. While Ash did accept, Shadow has never officially been contained in a Poke Ball. Shadow also had a hard time convincing Ash's daughter, Sapphire, that he was no longer their enemy. When Ash passed out after protecting Shadow from her when he should not have been able to stand, Shadow earned Sapphire's trust when he asked if she would watch over him until he got back with more berries.

Until Ash was able to walk again, Shadow acted as a lookout atop the roof to watch for any signs of his clan. Once they left the Pokemon Center for the Safari Zone, Shadow began to take his role as Ash's Pokemon very seriously. When Ash returned from a bathroom break with the wandering Lucario known as Lucy, he immediately mistook her for a member of his clan and would have killed her to prevent Ruby's survival from getting out if Ash had not intervened. Only when he was certain that Lucy was not from his clan did Shadow back down. Shadow even attempted to kill his former comrade, Pearl, when she showed up as a means of preventing his clan from discovering Ruby's survival. And when they stumbled upon Hawkeye by chance, Shadow took advantage of the sniper's fear of him to scare him off before attempting to kill him from a distance with an Aura Sphere.

Shadow's devotion to Ash was revealed when the Blackflame Five came after Ash when Hawkeye reported that Ruby was still alive and that Shadow had attacked him. Suspecting that Ruby had been raped and Shadow brainwashed, Thanatos ordered the Blackflame Five to execute Ash on sight. Just before he could return to Lilycove City, Ash was cornered and attacked by the Blackflame Five. Despite Shadow and Ruby's claims that they had left the clan for their own reasons, Thanatos was convinced that they were brainwashed to no end and ordered the Blackflame Five to kill Ash. But while Ash tried to lure them away from his friends and family, Shadow tried to buy him some time by taking on the entire Blackflame Five at once. He revealed his deep guilt for taking part in the mass genocide of the Lucario clans of Hoenn and claimed that Ash's near sacrifice had revealed the truth to him. He then claimed that he would avenge the people whose lives he had taken in the name of his clan while insuring that Ash would live on, even if it meant his death. Shadow fought bravely as he took on Titan and Silent Fang on his own, but he could not handle them both and nearly lost his leg when Titan struck him with the Aura Axe. While Pearl healed him the best she could, he could barely stand until the swelling died down.

But when Ash returned to Shadow with Lucash after being revived by the Eternal Flame, he even ignored the pain in his leg and ran to Ash before embracing him. Shadow was even carried by Ash until his leg had healed during a ferry ride to the south of Mauville City. But when the Blackflame Five returned to finish Ash off for certain, Shadow and Ruby managed to convince Thanatos that Ash was guilty of no crime and that they had willingly violated the laws of their clan, even though it meant that they would be put to death. But they were saved when the Eternal Flame within Ash became active and the Devil of the Eternal Flame slaughtered the Blackflame Five, with the exception of Pearl.

Shadow's father, having survived the final attack of a heartless traitor, was appointed as the Beta male under Thanatos' rule. With the death of Thanatos, he was appointed as the new Alpha male. Due to his connections to his father, Shadow is a prime candidate for becoming the new Alpha after his father. Whether or not he will accept this offer if asked remains to be seen. Another interesting fact to point out is Shadow's popularity with the females of his clan. Prior to his defection, he was viewed as the ideal mate by many of the maidens of the Blackflame clan. However, Shadow claims that he has no interest in romance and that he is a lifelong bachelor. But there may be another reason behind this. Due to his strong devotion to Ash and his displays of affection to him, it is possible that Shadow may in fact be homosexual or bisexual. No one has confronted him about this, but it is likely that he would deny such a thing if asked. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen.
