Description The Warrah AKA Falkland Island Wolf/Fox or Perro Yaghan, was a mysterious (semi-)domesticated canine that lived on Tierra del Fuego that went extinct in the 1800's.

They were the largest land mammals native to the island and lived around the Yaghan people and were used as hunting dogs or as bed warmers.

They now only exist in a few, atrociously constructed taxidermy specimens and some skulls [link]

Ever since they were discovered by western science in 1690, the exact origin of the Warrah has been a mystery, because there are no canines in that part of the world that could have been its ancestor, and its not clear how they could have gotten there.

It was assumed that they were a domesticated Culpeo Foxes [link] , since they bear a superficial resemblance to them. BUT, a recent study now shows that Warrah's closest living relatives are actually Maned Wolves! [link] , which would make it the only domesticated canine that wasn't of Canis lupus origin. (well, them and Belyaev's silver foxes [link] )
How cool is that?!

Scottish farmers fearing for their sheep, and fur farmers began hunting them. Charles Darwin, who briefly studied them, and predicted that they may heading toward extinction, like Dodos.

Warrah's had no fear of humans, and this trust led to their demise, 300 years after they were discovered. The hunter would draw them in with meat in one hand, and stab it to death with a knife in the other hand. That's why their scientific name Dusicyon australis means "foolish dog of the south"

The picture itself:
It's been 2 years since I've picked up my Prisma colors, so I'm very rusty. Wasn't too happy with how this turned out.

I apologize for the boring backgrounds. I really enjoy doing little pictures of rare or extinct dog breeds. The rest of them can be found in my scraps

Beautiful anatomy/colours, and well-done for calling it by its actual name, rather than calling it a "wolf".

I wonder if they can be recreated with breeding techniques like the Japanese are doing with the wolves.
