Nicholas was a marine biology major, and had a thing for mermaids. His phone was full of pictures of mermaids, same with his computer. He knew it was a silly fantasy, but mermaids were so pretty, and were the lucky ones in his opinion. They got to spend all their time in the water and look at all the pretty fish and colors. It wasn’t fair. Until Lilian came to the school, he had all but given up. So one day, he steeled his nerves. He wasn’t brave enough to ask her directly, but he was brave (or perhaps foolish) enough to ‘accidentally’ get in the crossfire of one of her spells. Collaborating with some other students, he sabotaged another student’s locker to reveal his niche fetish, and just managed to get himself and a few others caught in the crossfire.

Nicole was a mermaid. It was a strange thing, that she stayed in a lake rather than an ocean, but she preferred the freshwater over the saltwater. It was a nice place, lots of pretty colors and fish. She was pretty happy about it, at first. The colors eventually became repetitive. She couldn’t leave the lake she was in either. It also quickly dawned on her that she was alone. The occasional visit from marine biologists was nice and all, but that was all it was. Occasional. The regret that Nicholas had was immense, and he felt every bit of loneliness that Nicole felt.
