How baumkuchen came to Japan:

In 1898, the Empire of China leased the port city of Tsingtau (Tsingtao/Kiautschou/Quingdao) to Germany (Deutsches Reich).
As the most successfull, it became the "figurehead"-colony in the german colonial Empire until 1918 (the official german term was "Schutzgebiete" (protectorates)), more than Africa or New Guinea. However, it suffered from the same disadvantage as all german colonies: its input was higher than its output.

The Germans built a lot (e.g. a church and the governmental building seen in the background). Still today, Quingdao-beer is the most famous chinese beer ^^
Tsingtau served as trading station and naval base.

With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the Empire of Japan joined the Entente and declared war on Germany.
In September 1914, japanese forces started to besiege Tsingtau. In November the same year, after a heavy struggle, the Germans surrendered.
Among the POWs shipped to camps in Japan was baker a named Karl Joseph Juchheim.
When a exhibition of products took place in Hiroshima in 1917, Juchheim made the first baumkuchen in Japan.
After the end of the First World War in 1918, Juchheim and his wife stood in Japan, opening a bakery and pastry shop.
Baumkuchen became very popular in Japan very quickly and it is until today ^^
(the company "Juchheim" is still today the most famous baumkuchen-producer in Japan)

Germany in the top wears the uniform of an imperial german admiral with the badge of the iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz) in the button-hole. Below, he wears the uniform of the III. Seebattaillon (sea battaillon), the imperial german marines who defended Tsingtau.

Japan below wears the uniform of an imperial japanese general with the Order of the Rising Sun (Kyokujitsu-sho).

Baumkuchen (literally "tree cake") is a ring-formed pastry which is made by baking one layer of dough over the other on a rotating rod.
This leads to the characteristic lines resembling growth-rings of a tree, visible when the cake is cut through (which again leads to its name^^ ).
It's rather complicate to make and expensive to buy but very tasty

Japan looks really good in this are you thinking of drawing more of him or just draw the German Brothers/Sisters. I had some digital painting of Kiku but my laptop is not responding but his similar to the parade uniform of imperial Japanese officer and generals but for the collar it's the one on his summer (The white one) uniform in the anime epaulettes for the decorations and orders I gave him the order of the chrysanthemum, the order of the rising sun, the Russo-Japanese War Medal, the French legion of honor, the order of the sacred treasure, the German Eastern medal, the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with oak leaves and the Iron Cross 2nd class

Coole Arbeit~
*wein*

Mach weiter so!

I've made Baumkuchen once, it tasted pretty good but it was like a rolled up pancake so I think I must have done it wrong >.<
Cool comic, I can really imagine this happening in an episode of Hetalia thanks for the history lesson too XD

I can't bake myself, but as far as I know, you need special instruments for Baumkuchen and a lot of finesse and time (which is why it's rather expensive to buy).
But pancake's great, too ^^ (in the federal countries of Germany as well as Switzerland and Austria, there are different terms for pancakes).
Thank you very much ^^
Yeah, I guess the history of the German Empire (Deutsches Reich) is rather unkown, especially the history of the german colonies (Germany placed third or fourth among the colonial powers, even though being the latest (which is why german colonies were more of a fail, because they had to take what was left in Africa and Asia...))

I think I must have rushed it too much That's an interesting fact about pancakes too
I don't know a lot about history because I don't study it a lot but I find it really interesting to hear things like this ^.^
