Description Here I made a kind of recount of all the "important" Dante vs Vergil fights that I know, since it seems that there were more, for example when they were children since Dante liked to pick fights with Vergil to play, and it is not known how many times they fight in the ending from DMC5, so I only take into account the ones that can be seen.

I will make a "summary" and some thoughts of each one:

1- Manga Visions of V:
As Vergil was not paying attention to him to play with swords, Dante took away the William Blake book that a man from the library had given him. ("give that to me" reference xD) Vergil did not want to play but rather wanted to read and that is why he got so mad. Anyway, Eva stopped them, so I'll assume that no one won, although Vergil ends up running away to cry. Something curious about this manga is that for some reason V knows who Morrison is, who never came out until after DMC1, I wonder how he found out who he was and what he did and when he had time to find out lol. Well, in addition to showing something of what Mundus did to Vergil, they also show how Vergil feels after his defeats against Dante, it gives him a kind of inferiority complex, also V after saving a child and his mother from some demons, remembers what power is for, he also realizes that even if he is weak, if someone can, he will help him, like Trish and then Nero did. But... Well, I'll leave that for later xDD

2-Manga DMC3 Code 2: Vergil
That happens at the end of the manga, a demon girl named Alice who was in alliance with Arkham and Vergil, stole Dante's amulet and chasing her ended up in a place where there were some Sparda seals that needed to be broken, in this very brief fight, it seems to me that Vergil had the advantage, as happens in the first fight of DMC3, and he took the amulet from Dante, but Dante got quite angry and yelled at him until he gave it back to him with the excuse that he could take it off whenever he wanted and each one continuing on their path. Something curious is that in this manga, Dante believes that Vergil was dead because he had not seen him since Eva's death. Also in Code 1, Dante had a demonic transformation when Alice tried to seduce him before his awakening in the videogame.

3- DMC3 Videogame:
As we know, Vergil seeks to go to the demonic world but for that he needs Dante's amulet. In the manga, Dante made it clear that he was not going to help him because it seemed crazy to him to open portals to the demonic world.
The first fight I consider that Vergil won and gets what he really wants, which is the amulet, even though Dante later wakes up transformed and wants to continue fighting.

The second fight is because Vergil tries to open the portal to hell using the amulets and Sparda's blood, but he can't and then Dante arrives, this fight is interrupted first by Lady and then by Jester, who takes advantage of the fact that everyone is weak, so he "spanks" them lol, and with Lady's blood, which was what was missing, he manages to open the portal to hell.

The third occurs after they finish Arkham, due to their different objectives, Vergil and Dante fight almost to the point of killing each other. Vergil, although he is quite strong, still wants more power because he believes that without it he cannot protect even himself. Dante wants to stop him because his soul is asking him to, because we know that what Vergil does is wrong, because you can't get power without caring what happens to others and the world, which Vergil doesn't take into account. That's why Dante had to end up winning in the end.
Up to this point the story (excluding Visions of V) was a fight between brothers with a reasonable reason because it goes beyond just an unhealthy rivalry.

4- DMC1:
As we know, Vergil lost to Mundus and was corrupted and turned into Nelo Angelo to fight against Dante. In the first fight Nelo wins but cannot finish off Dante, since it seems that he begins to remember who he is, his mind is turned into shit and he runs away. Because of this I don't think he would actually want to fight Dante, much less kill him despite being controlled by Mundus.
In the second fight, Dante at the beginning tells him that he likes "a man with guts and honor" xD perhaps because of what he happened before, then he defeats him without interruptions, Nelo falls and transforms into energy and flies away.
And in the third fight Nelo loses and it seems as he explodes and disappears, only the amulet remains, that's why I put Fatality lol and we didn't hear from him again.

Up to this point the count goes Dante 3 - 2 Vergil. Although if we take into account what happened in the DMC3 manga as a victory for Vergil, it would be 3 - 3. And that is why I can't explain why in what follows, I seriously have to believe Vergil gives too much importance to his defeats, even when he didn't even know who he was, why was he brainwashed? with that phrase of "Suffering defeat after defeat" and that his last objective was to defeat Dante again?... .l. you xD

5- DMC5:
As it is implied, after his "traumatic" defeats, Vergil desperately decided to discard his "weak" part with the ultimate goal of beating his "invincible" brother xD so his demonic part was named Urizen after his human part who called himself V.
Well, in Dante's first fight against Urizen, at the beginning Dante is knocked out when Rebellion breaks even though he is in Devil Trigger mode, Urizen is going to catch him with his tentacles, I guess to absorb more power (cuz I ned mor powah although in seconds I humiliated my brother and his friends, the most powerful beings in the franchise xD) but Trish throws the Sparda sword at Dante who manages to free himself and attack Urizen, again using Devil Trigger, but Urizen still sends him flying to hell and wins the set.

In the 2nd fight after Dante obtained the Sin Devil Form and comes flying in to relieve Nero (who was fighting like a champ with no devil arm and no upgrades out of his ass, well not yet lol) Dante defeats him but not completely, because Urizen leaves because the Qliphoth was already ready and he wants to eat it (cuz I ned mor powah I don't know why, I guess to rule the demonic world like Mundus did and cuz I never interested in defeat Dante and I don't care what happened to my mom xD)

In the 3rd fight against Urizen, Dante (after unnecessarily psychoanalyzing Vergil with that thing that Eva loves him and also wanted to save him) once again proves that he is right as happened in DMC3, and kicks Urizen's ass even though he supposedly obtained much more power, that is, at the end of it didn't help that the tree consumed all that blood because the power up wasn't even felt, I think it was all a scam with that food product xDD

4th fight: Then Dante gets stupid and leaves a stranger the honor of giving the last blow to his cursed brother, but as we know V and Urizen merge and Vergil returns as if nothing had happened and humiliates Dante who the first thing he does when he sees him is insult him instead of at least asking for an explanation now that it seems he's not an unreasonable monster, then again Vergil remembers that he has that desire to defeat Dante because it is assumed that now in this game that became his goal before dying, not that stupid, meaningless quest for power that Urizen wanted xD on the other hand, we see how Dante wants to kill him despite everything, as if by killing him now he would be able to stop an invasion to of the demon world or undo the disaster he already made.

It's a curious thing that Urizen wants power and he sort of forgets that Dante exists but V wants power to stop being weak and then defeat Dante, but when he becomes Vergil again he wants to defeat Dante and stops looking for more power.

5th fight: Before the fight we see Vergil talking to himself (like crazy people does lol) doing a kind of reflection on his life, wondering if his life would have been different if he had exchanged places with Dante, if Eva had saved him and not Dante, like wanting to give us another compelling reason why his fight against Dante is so important to him that he wants to kill him. Then Dante comes to make fun of him about the portals and Vergil stupidly asks how many times they have fought already, which I thought he cared about because they explained to me that his defeats are his reason for doing what he did in this game XD

On the other hand, before that moment in which Vergil returns, the manga gave me to understand that Vergil has an inferiority complex because he lost (3 times counted to Nelo) against Dante, that he does not understand why he lost even though he is just as powerful than him, that he is upset because Eva did not want to save him, but despite that during his life experiences as V, as I said at the beginning, when saving a child, he remembered what power is and what it is for and he realized that there are people who can help you even if you are weak, that his brother Dante appreciates him because he considers him a strong person and that is why he likes to fight with him since they were children and V also realizes that he was not Vergil's weak part. Yet it is like all that happened to him is useless, because after all he is still even more of an idiot than he was before XD and his quest for power doesn't matter either anymore because as Urizen he already got everything he could get and yet he wants to kill Dante without a real compelling reason, there is nothing anymore, just that childish whim that got into his head about beat him.

And Dante is perhaps even worse at this moment because he just wants to kill him even though he tried to explain to him before that Eva did want to save him and something as he did in DMC3, that strength is to protect what is important, if it was really so important to kill him to save the world, why didn't he do it before and let V do it? Now it seems like he was angry just because they tricked him lol, but thank goodness Nero, (perhaps the only character who doesn't do stupid things in this game and save it) manages to FINALLY stop all this nonsense and with blows he makes those two stupid little kids understand what is really important to do now >:v

6th fight: This is now a children's game for real, but I'll put it in the count anyway XD

As a personal conclusion, what I feel is that if Vergil had returned in DMC5 only because he was trying to survive and the rest had been collateral damage, would have been better. Because had not included those explanations that Vergil felt bad for his defeats and that Dante is like the main culprit of all his misfortunes, are things that were unnecessary, because Dante and Vergil did not need those explanations to fight until they died again. Before DMC3 Vergil did not spend his time looking for Dante to beat him, in DMC3 he fought against Dante because he was getting in the way of his goal. Fighting to the point of wanting to kill each other had already been well laid out in DMC3 and things had ended as they should have ended, because Vergil chose a path of ambition and destruction and in the end he accepted defeat before Dante, he accepted himself as he was with pride and without showing weakness, he didn't use Yamato to separate his demonic side, he accepted that he had to stay in hell. And Dante knew that he had he had to win even though he would lose his brother, because it was what he had to do for the greater good and at the end it was the story of how Vergil ended up becoming Nelo Angelo. All that antics in DMC5 weren't necessary for Vergil to come back as the villain again, he could have simply returned to help correct the mistake he inadvertently caused and then fight Dante at the end on a whim as it ends everything anyway, instead of remaining a sociopath, a bad loser and self-conscious about the inferiority and envy he feels for his brother and Dante would not look more foolish and immature than he already was XD (foolishness Dante and Vergil foolishness...)

Well, I think that's all I feel about the topic about Vergil's return after so much time that has passed since DMC5, I wanted to comment on it separately to give it a kind of closure and vent and not to go on so long talking about this in another DMC post that I want to do.
