Description Skyward Sword Link's Shield~

Hurrah! Zombie Link triumphs again! Need sleep....

Completed my shield this morning, and all that's needed is the bolts, the strap on the back, and the handle. The surface was cleaned, front and back are now permanently attached, and it's ready to paint.

All details are just pieces of cardboard cut into shapes, and glued together. I use reference pictures to guide me, otherwise it's all free hand.

Cardboard, you are my dear friend, in your many cheap versatile ways~

I need to make my own Hylian shield in the next 3 days, so I'm drawing inspiriation from yours. I hope it turns out even half as well

Aww, I really hope yours turns out well too! Just take your time, and plan out all your measurements first, the building stage is pretty easy in comparison, and will be quick!

I know it's crunch time, but if you need any help, I'll do my best to answer you as quick as possible if you have questions on certain parts.

Thanks! I've actually got it mostly done now, but your in-progress shots were an enormous help. I built the base of the shield and the outer rim thing using your method, but made the raised details in the middle out of clay/foam. I cheated a bit by printing out a to-scale picture of the shield for my pattern, though, hahaha. Now I just need to paint it, and figure out how to attach it to my arm/back...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHylianKnightx In reply to MaxTheBird [2013-03-20 22:44:14 +0000 UTC]

Haha, it's not cheating! I don't have a printer, so whatever works, works! It's probably a lot quicker too, just printing the pattern to get dimensions. I've never used clay either, but I heard it was great to work with.

Attaching the shield.. isn't the hard part, but having it practical to pull off instantly, and clip on... is. I wish I had something at the moment, but I've been figuring out methods for a bit now, because I'm making a heavier wooden shield next. Since the cardboard/foam version is super light, you don't need a very strong harness to support it.

As for the arm, if you see pictures of the inside, there is a leather strap, and "metal" handle. I didn't really take pictures of that... I guess I should have. Hmm...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MaxTheBird In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-04-04 17:21:52 +0000 UTC]

I didn't end up having time to make the inside part correctly, which is something I want to fix for next time. I ended up just making two cardboard straps in approximately the right places. I also just ended up wearing it on my arm for the entire convention, which was much less of a problem than I thought it would be.

PS: I'm really looking forward to seeing the progress on your Hero's Shade costume. The Midna of my group also considered going as either a Darknut or the Hero's Shade, so I ended up looking into making all three. I think HS would have been pretty fun to make, though. I hope it goes well for you ^_^

I've carried around my shield many times too, I'm happy it wasn't an issue for you either! Did you have fun though?

Aww thanks! I was undecided between Hero's Shade, of one of the Guardians in Skyward Sword, haha. You should definitely do all three, Darknuts are amazing, I also love Iron Knuckles from OoT.

Thank you! I'm very fortunate to have a keen eye for symmetry, so helps a ton. It can be a very expensive hobby, so I try to find cheaper ways, to show it's accessible to anyone wanting to try, who are in similar situations.

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-02-26 15:35:00 +0000 UTC]

you sure are, my symmetry often sucks D: and that really is awesome, I often stop up and consider quitting cosplay because of the expenses :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHylianKnightx In reply to Gwan-chan [2013-02-26 22:28:16 +0000 UTC]

I had the same problem, I thought about quitting several times. I love the hobby though, but another thing that helped, was just having one large costume a year. I know some people make dozens, it's insane, haha.

Dollar stores are amazing to find random materials too, and really, just use what you have on hand. Sometimes great ideas can come to mind, and find costumes that you can make with those items.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-02-28 07:46:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, I also thought very much about just doing that. Just doing those I have planned with others for this year, but then pull back and only make between 1-2 a year. To spare my sparetime, stress-level and wallet :b

and unfortunately, I don't live in the US.. So we don't really have one dollar stores xD But thrift stores are very useful as a substitute

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHylianKnightx In reply to Gwan-chan [2013-03-01 15:35:32 +0000 UTC]

Ah sorry! But yes, thrift stores are great too. The dollar store comment, was more geared towards finding items at a low cost (our dollar stores aren't even a dollar anymore, they're more like 3-5$, haha). It's really easy to re-use even household items, when money is tight.

I hope things get less stressful for you then~ I know how much time it eats up, which is great and all, and can be fun... except if you do it every year, it can be a bit much. Unless it's the only hobby you enjoy, then power to you!

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-03-02 19:42:24 +0000 UTC]

haha, know what you mean :b prices sure go up. And I have an embarrising amount of old cardboard from IKEA-items stocked under the bed, haha!

And it can be very stressful to do year in and out, but mostly when you get stuck in one project :b But well. Power to you too!

I could imagine, I think most cosplayers feel like that, haha! In my country we don't have halloween, but something else in february called fastelavn where you dress up as basically anything and beat a barrel xD Like a crossover from the mexican "dia de muerta"-holidays and american halloween.. It was always great for me too, god I loved dressing up every year

xHylianKnightx In reply to Gwan-chan [2013-03-05 14:15:04 +0000 UTC]

That festival sounds awesome! I love learning about other cultures~

Sometimes I wish, costumes were quicker to make, because I would wear a costume to work every day if I could, haha. I used to work at a gaming store, so they let me dress up and host events for new games. XD

I have done cosplay inspired clothing though, that look more normal, but have some aspects of characters I like. I'm trying to learn how to sew better~

Is cosplay pretty big where you live? Do many people dress up and attend conventions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-03-05 16:21:10 +0000 UTC]

it really is! unfortunately, it's getting smaller and smaller every year :C a lot of adults don't teach it to their children because they think it's begging to go from door to door asking for candy/money dressed up..

Haha, I sure often wish it was quicker too! Wouldn't want to dress up every day though, waaaay to much work, haha! xD All that bloody make-up, latex ears, parts, wigs and so forth.. terrible! But great that you did that! I once worked in a toy store, where I once put on a Stitch kigurumi to work. The kids loved it, but they asked me to take it off anyway :C

And I also try to learn how to sew better, since it's one of my weaknesses!

and cosplay is not so big to say in the country overall, but the population taken in consideration, I actually think a lot dresses up nowadays! We have a total population of 5,5 mio. people, and at every convention I think there is around 1-2 thousand that dresses up more or less.. I'm also part of a danish cosplay magazine, and we get around 6-8 thousand views on each issue ^^
What about at the conventions you attend?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHylianKnightx In reply to Gwan-chan [2013-03-07 16:03:23 +0000 UTC]

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that it's getting less popular. Sometimes we just host cosplay picnics, and play games when people can't go trick or treating.

It can be a lot of work, most definitely! I have a few easy cosplays though, that take barely 10-15 minutes to dress in, while others... take almost an hour. Why did they ask you to take off your Stitch costume? Was it too hard to work in/serve customers?

Our smaller conventions are around 1500 people, while the larger ones like Anime North are closer to 25 000 for the weekend. We have a very large cosplay community, and it seems to get larger every year. The past couple years, has been the biggest jump in attendance too I noticed. Most conventions are run by fans for the fans.

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-03-08 15:16:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah, me too.. Children nowadays :C
And we also do some cosplay-activities sometimes :b

wow, a whole hour? Fortunately, I have none of those <3 which I'm greatfull for xD
And they just thought it was stupid/childish :/ in a toystore.. Old hags. It didn't have an influence of my work progress at all, except talking a little more with the children.

And Wow, 25.000? insane! The biggest one we have is around.. 3-4000, and I think it's big :b And it really has to be voluntary work to make its way, else it will be about profits (am part of quite a few voluntary japan-related things) and not the fun ^^
And it must be wonderful to have such a big community to take part in! So many friends to be met, can't even imagine

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHylianKnightx In reply to Gwan-chan [2013-03-09 19:11:01 +0000 UTC]

Blahh, some people just never want to have fun or smile. :/ Well hopefully you can do fun stuff in the future!

3-4000 people, is still a lot! I find, the really bigger conventions are actually harder to make friends, and visit panels/events, because you are rushing around and it can get overwhelming. I always have to make my schedule, months in advance, haha. Smaller conventions, people are closer, and friendlier too.

Ohh, what sort of Japanese things do you help with? I'm trying to learn Japanese this year, for when I travel to Japan. I used to watch anime all the time, and I study bujutsu and iaido.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-03-11 08:04:13 +0000 UTC]

wow, months in advance?! that's crazy Ö our conventions don't even lay out their program before a couple of weeks before... Insane! (I'm going to one this weekend, and they haven't come out with the official program..)

And actually, it's most just the pop-culture I would love to be interested in more traditional japanese stuff, But I just ain't.. It's fun to read historic books and fold origami and stuff, but I don't have the patience to learn japanese or anything like it. I am part of a danish cosplay magazine (www.issuu.com/DKos), and then I help a little out with some smaller events in the city. What is Bujutsu and Iaido at all? sounds traditional :b

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHylianKnightx In reply to Gwan-chan [2013-03-13 02:57:54 +0000 UTC]

Only the big cons, I plan in advance, haha. I like to help with photoshoots, and some events are the same time every year, so it's easy to schedule around. We normally don't get the official schedule either until a few weeks before, but we have forums to help plan in advance with other members.

Ohh, which convention are you attending this weekend? And which cosplays are you hoping to bring? It's so exciting~

Aww haha, no worries. Being interested in pop-culture sounds just as fun! That magazine looks really amazing too, I've never really seen a cosplay magazine, even though I know they exist. Thank you for sharing the website! Ohh, Bujutsu is the study of Martial Arts, and Iaido is specifically swordsmanship, where you learn how to draw your sword and cut in one swipe.

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-03-15 08:23:05 +0000 UTC]

wow, you seem to help out a lot and yet being having a good time I also have trouble with knowing where to be at the right times, haha!

And I'm going to a con called J-popcon, the biggest in Denmark :b I'm only bringing one cosplay though, Kida from Atlantis (disney). I'm performing with her and competing for MCM Expo and Japan Expo qualifications ^^ And I'm always so eager for the cosplay shows! They are the reason I'm going and staying J-popcon.

thank you! I'm so proud of being a part of it and writing articles that are featured. A part of my conventions now also goes to magazine related time, where I take streetsnaps and go to panels that would be worth an article. And of course get in contact with some awesome cosplayers!
And that sounds really cool! I have always been kinda into martial arts, I'm good at some japs and kicks in Thai-boxing, and my boyfriend also wants to start practicing some mixed martial arts * w* And Iaido sounds like something I've read in Samurai Deeper Kyo, haha! He was the quickest to draw his long sword

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHylianKnightx In reply to Gwan-chan [2013-03-16 21:56:03 +0000 UTC]

I think, it's easier because they are events & photoshoots that I would be visiting anyways, so helping out doesn't really cause any problems, or ruin other plans. I've been cosplaying for about 5 years now, so I'd like to give back to the community~

Oh! Tell me how your convention went! Did you have a good time? Do anything special? How did the qualifications go?

I never really thought of it like that before, but you're right! Being able to interview cosplayers, and do photography, everything sounds very open to creativity. That's really amazing what you do, I'm happy you enjoy it so much! Do you get to attend many conventions then as a media guest? I was always curious how that worked, hehe.

I think all martial arts are pretty fun~! It's great that your bf is interested too, because you can have a sparring partner at home, haha. I've been pretty lazy lately, and just hiking each week, but it allows me to practice photography too.

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-03-18 17:53:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, know that feeling I really love being part of some initiatives instead of 'just' cosplaying.

And It was the best J-popcon I have had ever I won the MCM Expo solo qualification, so I'm off to London as cosplay contestant at fall! So happy, I cried a little when I won :b

And yeah, it's REALLY great <3 loving it to pieces, haha! And recently, we began to get press badges for the magazine (we have been up and running for under a year), so from now on I think i will get some free media-guest passes for the conventions If I do well in cosplay, I can might even get invited to some conventions.. But we'll see!

And I know the feeling. Being so 'lazy' that exercise just becomes some walking with a camera ~

Ah!! Congratulations! You work hard on your costumes, so it's well deserved!

That would also be amazing, if you could be a guest at some conventions! I forget if I asked before, how long have you been cosplaying for? I'm always really impressed at some work some people can do, and your stuff always looks so cleanly done. I'm trying my hand at photography this year, but more just for amusement, and practice. I've always taken pictures of nature, and not people, so I'll have to learn some tips.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-03-22 07:06:43 +0000 UTC]

thank you ^^# <3 teehe. And it was my first girl cosplay furthermore ~

yeah, I would love it! Just have to.. you know, get more awesome so that they will invite me xD but working on it. And I have been cosplaying for.. well.. 4 years I think? but it didn't get 'serious' before 2 years ago, and I'm still learning A LOT on construction xD And they are only clean on the outside, believe me.
And photography is also very fun! I do a little myself, but mostly of other cosplayers :b And it really helps you if you have someone who can give you tips! On angels, technigues, and if you have a SLR camera, have someone explain you the functions! And then get inspiration from other photos with settings and angles :3 My best tip is just to find good lightning and use basic photoshop and lightroom xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHylianKnightx In reply to Gwan-chan [2013-03-23 14:35:14 +0000 UTC]

Pff, no worries! I'm entering as a Master this year (I've been cosplaying for 5 years, and done Masquerades for 4 years), but I'm a novice in so many techniques. There's just so many options, and always something new you can learn on construction. I take my costumes seriously, but I don't think I ever competed seriously. Conventions were always a social hub, and I love hosting events, and interacting with fans. I love theater work, so it lets me do that too in a way~

Haha ya! Lighting is my worst enemy in photography, I never know what is proper... so it's just practice needed! I don't have any local photographer friends, a few who do it for fun, but I end up knowing more then them... D: I don't have photoshop though, I heard most people use it? I have basic Paint... but I only use that to resize images smaller. D:

I sort of envy awesome cosplayers like you guys~ You tend to have great pictures of your cosplays, and amazing skill all wrapped into one!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gwan-chan In reply to xHylianKnightx [2013-03-24 07:25:33 +0000 UTC]

haha, then we have done it for equal amount of years, more or less :b
And yes, construction is always a bitch. I have this new project coming up, with clothing from the renassance ;_; I have digged my own grave. But at the same time, I'm so excited about it!!
and competing seriously, isn't something in my opinion that you should do at all.. at least not in cosplay, because you will just end up not having fun, getting no new friends and just be sour when you don't win and your acts don't turn out good if you don't really feel for it.
And yeah, I love hosting as well, when I am we have this very small get-together with only 100 people in a couple of weeks, and they are always so comfy and fun <3 And I always dance my shit to win milkshakes xD

Well, that really sucks :/ that there are no photographer-friends nearby.. But you could try and read some lightning-articles in magazines or online? I have often found some useful articles on the topic! And yeah, mostly everyone who I know that takes photos use either photoshop or Lightroom, because they can allow you to turn almost any picture into a gorgeous photo! Like, every picture. you should try downloading a trial!

And haha, oh stop it! Your FF-cosplay was A-ma-zing! And your props really rock!! And the reason I have pretty pictures, is because either photographers ask me to get photos at conventions, or I pull a local photographers arm and say 'photoshoot, please!!' xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHylianKnightx In reply to Gwan-chan [2013-03-27 14:03:11 +0000 UTC]

Aww, I love clothing from the renaissance time~ The patterns can be very elaborate too, I think it will be a fun project!

I understand what you mean... about being too serious about competition. I want it to stay fun, not get more stressful then it can already be, haha. Tell me how your little get-together went! It sounds like fun, I prefer the smaller conventions, because they are more personable, and people are friendly!

I'm so torn with photoshop! I do think it can make amazing pictures, but I always wanted to learn how to take great photos the first time, without editing anything. I guess, maybe I feel like that, because I make my costumes to look good in person (for my events), and I've never really done modeling, or photography with people, just with nature. I think I found a trial though, so I'll play around and give it a shot! Thanks for the advice~ I'm grateful!

XDD That's awesome! We do have many photographers at conventions too! Maybe I'll stop trying to hide from them. XD

sorry for the late reply I guess life just came and smacked me!
and the get-together was very comfy as always! Lots of small competitions, I kept my 1st place in just dance on Xbox kinect (huzzah!) and just had comfy time with friends and fun quizzes!

and you are welcome sure it is good to take good photos before editing it in photoshop, but everybody uses photoshop afterwards to turn a good picture into a great picture. Just the way it is I think nowadays :b

And seriously, stop hiding! often, you can also just go up and ask them if they want to take your photo because you want a good photo to show of your costume. Often they will just be happy that you ask ^^

It's alright! I've been having trouble keeping up with my messages too lately, I often don't have enough time to reply to them all, so I try to do a bunch every day. Take your time, there's no worry!

I've used Kinect twice.. haha. I can't dance at all, so I would fail so miserably. XD My friend wants me to try the DDR at the next convention, but that seems even worst!

I'll try to take your advice, and maybe ask a photog for a few photos. XD At least then I'll have something decent to show~ The weather is getting nicer outside, so I'm excited to practice more photography outside. It only it would stop raining. D:
