Description Finally finished the drawing of Aaron Kelly from Season 9 on American Idol.

I'm really glad to finish this one. It felt like it took forever, and I wasn't very motivated once I got finished shading half of his face.
I tend to get less excited about drawing hair and clothing once I finish the eyes and the rest of the face. I get lazy at that point, as most people can probably tell. haha

Anyway.

Aww Aaron is very shy. He's young though, so he has a reason to be. Although, he's really a great singer, so he should develop more confidence. I'm sure he will though

I still don't know anything about American Idol, but this is excellent! Seriously, your version of getting lazy is incredibly better than mine. I'm not too good with hair. I just haven't really practised it much I think.

Haha, yeah, I get lazy with hair and stuff. It's a bit sad. I read this one artist's portrait tutorial or something a long, long time ago and it said, "You should spend as much time on the hair as you do the entire face."
and I was like " I don't do that." and even after reading it, sometimes I'd spend more time on it, but nowadays I just get lazy anymore.
I guess I just get tired of looking at the drawing and just get eager to finish it.
Practice always helps, from portrait to portrait. It's worth it though.
Thank you very much!

What I don't get is that you were lazy with the hair, and yet it still turned out really wonderful... Hmmm...?
I can only conclude you must be awesomely talented!

I don't know him but this drawing is really great! How did you shade the skin and the background? ;_; If I scan my drawings, the whole shading is gone =.= Or most of it... Hate it

This drawing was actually a lot different shading wise for me since the one side of his face was extremely dark in the reference photo.. So that meant I had to shade a lot darker than usual on it.

For the background, I just put a layer of pencil quickly across all of it. I am pretty sure it was a 2B pencil here. Then, I just used a blender on it.. I believe it is a pastel blender, but I just tested it for some reason on the pencil one day. Since it was quick, I continued using it. It's actually supposed to be a pastel "shaper", but since I never use pastels, so found a better use for it.
I got it in this set: [link]
The one I used for smudging the background of this drawing is the one on the far left.. the tip is like plastic-like almost.. so it smudges around pencil lead quite easily... I just used it to smudge the pencil lead all around in different directions and such. Some parts I did a circle motion to smudge it, and then other parts I just went straight across.

When I scan my drawings, the contrast is way off. If you use photoshop or any other photo editing software, it's good to change the brightness and contrast a bit. You might know to do that already, but if you don't, it's a good tip. It helps me dramatically. My drawings look pretty awful when they're first scanned. They don't even look like they do in person. My scanner has horrible contrast, so I always have to fix it.

I hope that will help a bit.
and thank you!

I know what you mean! I have a few unfinished portraits laying around my room for similar reasons. Clothing can be so boring and drawing strands of hair can take awhile. I had to look him up since I don't watch television. Excellent work, Nicole!! Glad you finished it.

I rarely have unfinished portraits laying around that I end up finishing later on... this one I more-or-less had to finish, so I did. haha
Luckily I only started this one a 2 or 3 weeks ago, so it wasn't like it had been sitting around 3 or 4 months... those are the hardest to finish.
and thank you! I appreciate it!

You're welcome! I finally got around to finishing one of those drawings. My scanner is being difficult or I would upload it.

I'm glad it looks like him. I feared that it ended up looking a bit weird.
Thank you very much for the support on it.
