Sadly 99.99999999999% of the fanfictions I've read are very bad. There are excellent stories out there though, romance or not romance, if you look hard enough.

It's one of the main reasons I don't read romance-driven stories, yeah. I'm all good when it's Harry, and then a relationship with someone else is slowly, organically introduced. But most romance-focused ships (hell, even adventure-driven fics where the author is a shipper) tend to go the "Harry loved her/him all along, didn't you notice? Here's why!" route.

So even if it's a fic starting on second year, if it's a Harry/Hermione shipper, Harry will have ALWAYS known Hermione was special and kind and patient, and such a better friend than Ron, and isn't she really pretty, and don't you remember he blushed so hard when he first saw her in the train? She really brings out the scholar in him, too~

It's bothersome because it comes out of nowhere: that relationship wasn't developed, it was just plopped down in front of us, and fortified by made-up facts that come outta nowhere, too. It's completely out of character, too, because I don't think Harry had his hormones turned on until he started noticing Cho was pretty, and then, it was a much more awkward and subtle thing (I don't like Cho, but I liked her crush development with Harry way more than I liked the lack of build-up to Ginny).

But yeah! Making up drastic facts or drastically changing a character's personality to fit with another one is just no good. 9=

Totally understand. I'm writing a Harry Potter fic, myself, but I have no idea how to work in romance; and there sort of has to be romance in the story because of certain plot devices; however, the story was written largely as a humor-fic. It's one of those Harry/multiple girls things, but I'm only doing it because I thought it would be amusing.

I wouldn't be able to offer any help there. xD I've never tried my hand at harem / multiple girls thing (the later being different from harem because the main character doesn't date them all at the same time, but he does date lots of girls through the course of the story). I guess it would depend on whether you want the romance to be taken seriously or not. =O

There's one or two harem fics I really really like, but they're comedy crack: the main character is weirded out by how many people like him and seem eager to go out with him, so you sort of end up agreeing that he's lovable, because he is, but laugh at the situations he's unwillingly put into. So yeah, I only read harems and multiple-pairings when they're comedy. xD I've yet to find a fic that uses either tool well in a serious manner.

There are a few where Harry ends up with two or three girls that are written seriously, though. But, yeah, I am thinking I'll just have to use a Deus ex Machina; besides, as a comedy, it shouldn't be too much of a problem anyway. Thanks for the feedback, though.

Haha, to each their own. xD I personally just never enjoyed most plot arguments for Hermione x Snape or Harry x Snape. Well, there was ONE I liked, it was a two-shot and it involved Harry accidentally being sent back in time to Marauder time, but I can't remember any other fic that I liked with that pairing. o .o

Haha, so long as the ship is well-thought-out and In-Character, I tend to ship any of my favorite characters with nearly everyone else (not including outlandishly-older/younger characters). So it's all good!

I think both have the potential to be really cute. During their first years, sure Hermione and Ron weren't fit for each other at all, but as they grew and matured, you see Hermione grew out of her strict self, and Ron began having a bit more tact. That was because of each other, and I actually love the Hermione x Ron couple.

Harry x Ginny, I didn't like, but that's because the pairing came out of nowhere. It felt like Ginny just dropped out of existence in the middle of being an endearing fangirl with a crush, and re-appeared being a badass beautiful babe who Harry suddenly loves. I would have liked to see more of how Ginny became that woman, and why exactly she was 'perfect for Harry'. Out of the pairing, I actually like Ginny a lot. But then, the HP series isn't romance-oriented (which is super awesome to me), so I wouldn't have asked for less action and more romancey chapters.

I know! She was a fangirl and the younger sister of Ron who was super shy, then she's almost just lingering as a mutal friend, and all of a sudden Harry was in love with her. They do work, it seemed rushed. The movies rushed their relationship to me, the books played it out much better, but movies cant copy the book word for word.

But otherwise their good pairing.
I know, I like the less romantic and more action, but the little hints and traces of it are nice :3

Haha, as much as I think the HarryGin relationship is rushed in the books, I love it to pieces when compared to the movie version of events. xD

In all honesty, she all but threw herself at Harry in the movies.

"Hey Harry, let me tie your shoelace off-camera."

"Hey Harry, pull up the zipper of my dress, although I could've asked any member of my family, Hermione, Mom, or anyone else in the house."

I thought it was pretty tactless and not endearing in the least. xD Book-Ginny is awesomesauce.

Haha yes! It IS one of the best relationships in the series. Book Ginny was in my opinion a badass while in the movie she was toned down and more quiet.

Don't forget when she practically rape-kissed him in movie six in the Room of Hidden Things hiding the Potions text book. I liked the book kiss better after they win the Quittich cup.

I've found a bunch of Harry x Luna fics, myself. But in most of them, it's AU where Harry grew up into an eccentric guy made into a 'perfect fit' for Luna's eccentricities. xD That, I don't like. I like Harry weirded out by Luna's antics, and still accepting of them anyway, like he is in the books.
