If I can offer a suggestion on coloring it would be to color inside the lines.
If you click "Preserve Opacity" on a layer it'll make it so you can't draw outside the contents of that layer. Also good for recoloring and such. You can also use the hue and saturation sliders in the filters menu at the top right of SAI.
You might already know all this though
