Description
when she kissed me, the taste of ashes
invaded the cavern of my mouth and rested, heavy
against the seabed of my lungs. i heard the shipwrecked sailors there
cry out,
angry they had been disturbed
without consent.
my mouth did not ask for an invader, my tongue
bit itself trying to scream protest but was silenced
by the smog on her breath.

i don't smoke,
but if i did i'd say she was the best packet of cigarettes
you could buy. problem is,
we poets make so many metaphors out of smoking we forget smoking
kills. it burns. it makes your windpipe
fold in on itself like the broken limbs of a
dead, blackened oak. it makes you feel good and
silences
the protest.

my protest was still there when she kissed me,
when she touched me and
i wish
i'd said something then
instead of living with a layer of coal dust on my skin
that's invisible to the rest of humanity.
i wish i could clean it,
set fire to it, burn it off but you can't set a pile
of ashes ablaze;

i was the fossil fuel and she was
a three in one offer - fire,
oil refinery and big business in one. she burned me,
made me suit her purposes and sold me out
for her own gain. i was the fossil fuel;
now i'm global warming, the aftermath -

there is acid in my eyes and an extinct
muscle in my chest. i should have said something,
should have let the ghosts from the shipwrecks climb my windpipe
and demand
who was walking on their graves. should have let my tongue
scream for help,

but there was something
in the air that night
and it choked my lungs with saltwater
so i couldn't say
'No.'

i should have said 'No.'

I just want to say, I'm so in love with this. And it's one of the first pieces on here in a long time that I thought, that needs a DD.
And others thought the same! So congrats!

It's "nice" to read from a men's perspective. Too many people believe that only women are sexually abused...
Thank you for writing and sharing this

Honestly, I totally planned to skip this, until the very last verse caught my attention. It was short, yet decadent in splendor.

Eventually, I read every words and here I am.

I don't usually write any comment, but my hat's down for you. It was stunning and beyond meaningful.

Firstly, congrats on the DD! It's very well deserved. Usually, I don't read poetry, but I'm very happy I stopped to read this one. The imagery was amazing and I like the contrast/juxtaposition between the wet/ sea associated with sailors( or at least in my mind) and the dryness of fire. I think my favourite phrase/line is 'i was the fossil fuel;/now i'm global warming, the aftermath -" it really pushes the oil metaphor to full force.Β

ALSO! I just noticed something small and it's very interesting. Are all the i's lowercase because the man/boy feels little of himself? Considering he feels ruined and whatnot.

Overall, keep writing!Β

To answer your question, all the i's are lowercase as that's just my personal style of writing - although it could definitely be interpreted in that way.

It's sad that our society puts so much pressure on men to be "manly" that as a result, countless men who've been through this kind of thing are afraid to speak out.

I love the message you're sending with this poem.

I do agree, it's very sad that men are pressured by society but I hope that will change at some point so they can speak out and get the help they need.

And thank you!

Beautiful words, tbh, I loved it but at first and second read it didn't say "rape" to me, only "I made a wrong decision about this person, and gave in to temptation and live with regret". It was when i read the comments and saw the info I realized what you were saying. I actually identified strongly with it before that because, in my way distant past - I have never smoked - I was with a lot of women that did smoke for entirely wrong reasons (like just to have sex ) and due to the fact that they did and the taste etc was so foreign to me, it was something that I identified with the wrong decision. Well done though, love the writing.

Looking over it, I can definitely see how someone could interpret this piece in that way - that's one of the things I love about poetry though, it's completely open to interpretation. Your interpretation is completely as valid as my one in the description. Thank you as well for your comment and kind words!

I love you for what you said. I have been arguing about the fact that male rape victims are a thing, and that female rapists are a thing, for years now and felt like I must be in a very tiny group of people who felt that way.

I love this piece both for its message, as something with a message, and also as a piece of artwork with your customary brilliant diction. Your phrases are acrobats and you are the best ringmaster I've seen in a while. I have favorite lines and favorite phrases and I am probably going to read this another ten times before this week is ended and I think this should get a Daily Deviation so I need to go find whoever you tell that to.

I definitely agree with that viewpoint and I've also felt like I was in the minority for a very long time - its good to know there's more people out there that know male victims do exist, as do female rapists like you said.

Thank you so much for the compliments (I'm blushing really badly right now xD)Β and for suggesting this piece for a daily deviation!! Β Β
