Bearn was an independent state from midth century up to 1620 when it was acquired by France.
The area has kept a very specific indentity (customs, polyphonic singing, traditional dances and language).
Their language, Bernaise, is considered a dialect of Gascon, but some recognize it as a separate one.
Recently, there is a linguistic revival undergoing there and growing demands for autonomy, at least cultural.
