Established in 1857 as a settlement and as a city in 1972.
Became a federal territory in 1974 and in 1978 was declared the capital of Malaysia.
The capital was moved in 2001 to Putrajaya, but Kuala Lumpur still retained its legislative
functions (seat of the parliament) and remained the home of the Yang di Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia.
He resides in the Istana Negara, a palace in the city.
