After a complicated history dating back to the prehistoric times, Kelantan avoided Siamese takeover by placing itself under British protection
as the Unfederated Malay State.
It was first to be invaded by Japan in WWII which gave it to Siam.
British rule was returned in 1945 and Kelantan joined the Federation of Malay in 1948 becoming independent with it in 1957.
In 1963, Kelantan started new era as one of the components of Malaysia.
Most of the population is Malay, with Thai, Chinese and Orang Asli (indigenous) minorities.
