Gorkhaland is the name of the proposed state in India demanded by the Nepali/Gorkhali- speaking Gorkha ethnic group in
Darjeeling and the Dooars in nort West Bengal.
The movement for a seperate state of Gorkhaland gained serious momentum during the 1980s when a violent agitation was carried
out by Gorkha National Liberation front.
It led to the establishment of a semiautonomous Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council in 1988 to govern certain areas of Darjeeling
District.
However, in 2008, a new party called the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha raised the demand for a seperate state of Gorkhaland once again.
On April 18, 2001, GJM signed an agreement with the state and central governments for the formation of Gorkhaland Territorial Administaration,
a semiautonomous body that would replace the DGHC in the Darjeeling hills.
The GTA has three hill subdivisions:
Darjeeling,
Kalimpong
Kurseong
and some areas of Siliguri subdivision under its authority.
Subhas Ghising of GNLF, who was sidelined by Bimal Gurung of the GJM and went into exile for two years, returned to Darjeeling recently
and entered a new political activity there.
There are 10 million Gorkhas in India, with about 900.000 of them in the Darjeeling District alone...
