The name means "region of snowy mountains".
The state is located in northern India and borders Jammu and Kashmir to the north,
Punjab on the west and southwest, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on the south, Uttarakhand on the southeast and Tibet on the east.
Himachal Pradesh was anciently known as Dev Bhumi (The Adobe of Gods).
After the Anglo-Gurkha War, the British colonial government came into power.
In 1950, Himachal Pradesh's economy is highly dependent on hydroelectric power, tourism and agriculture.
It has one of the highest per capita incomes of any state in India.
Hindus make up 95% of the state population, making it the most Hindu state in India.
It is also ranked the second-least corrupt state in the country after Kerala.
