Komi are members of the Permian branch of the Ugro-Finnic people and live in the north-east European Russia around the basins of
the Vychegda, Pechora and Kama rivers.

They are generally Eastern Orthodox.
Komis came under the influence of the Novgorod already in the 12th century. They were converted to Christianity in 1383 by Stephen of Perm.
Russia took over the region in the 15 th century and the Russian colonists started settling there.
It also became the site of many penal settlements and the gulags in Soviet times.
There were numerous uprisings against the Russian rule and an attempt to proclaim the independent republic encouraged by the Allies
during the Civil War.
The Bolshevik rule was harsh and intensive industrialization brought complete change to the ethnic composition of already Russian dominated region.
There are nationalistic movements there (Komi Voityr is one) but those are generally weak.
