The Dargins make up 16.5% of the population of Dagestan 426.000
They live in the present location for a long time. In the Middle Ages, they formed the state of Kaitag until the Russian conquest.
They are the speakers of the Dargin languages of the Nakh-Dagestani group.

Most of them are Sunni Muslims with the Shi'a minority.
The Dargins resisted russification by simply refusing to participate in programs to relocate them out of the highlands and into the
lowland towns and collective farms. Thus, the majority of the Dargins still maintain a traditional lifestyle in the mountains.

After 1991, in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union, anti-Russian secessionist nationalism is gaining strength among the Dargins, but is still at the relatively low level.

Note that the flag is missing a main symbol in the middle which is an eagle due to lack of original examples
