Description Leon / Llion / Rexon Llionesa / Pais Lliones

Wiki[link]

The Leonese Region is a part of the Autonomous Community of Castile and Leon.
It is not Castilian in culture, language or identity. Until 1833, the formerly independent Kingdom of Leon,
situated in the northwest part of the Iberian Peninsula, retained the status of a kingdom although dynastic union had
brought it into the Crown of Castile.

Now, the Leonese Region is composed of the provinces of Salamanca, Zamora and Leon and it has its own regional government (Diputacion de Leon).
In 1188 the Kingdom of Leon developed what may have been the first Parliament in Europe, and in 1202 a legislation about economics.

The Leonese language is recognized as official in the Autonomous Community of Castile and Leon.
Leonese nationalists demand the separation of Leon from Castile and creation of its own Autonomous Community.
The regional government supports that idea which is best articulated by the Union del Pueblo Leones-UPL.

Some members of that group press for the complete independence of Leon.
