One of the 20 regions of Italy, Le Marche (The Marches) is located in the central area of the country on the Adriatic coast.
Except for the river valleys and the often very narrow coastal strip, the land is hilly.

Cap : Ancona

Occupied orginally by the Senones, a tribe of Gauls, it was conquered by the Romans after the Battle of Sentinum in 295 BC.
The Romans founded numerous colonies in the area, connecting them to Rome by the Via Flaminia and the Via Salaria...

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the region was invaded by the Goths, later becoming part of the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna and
possesion of the Lombards to be conquered by Charlemagne in the late 8th century, who gave it its modern name.

Later Marche was nominally part of the Papal States, but major cities ruled themselves as free communes.
Ancona was a maritime republic on its own.

Marche was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.

Presently, the federalist-minded Lega Nord garners about 6.3% of the vote in the regional elections.
