The Iranian Turkmen are an ethnic minority who speak the Turkish language with the Eastern Oghuz accent.
The same dialect is spoken in the Republic of Turkmenistan.
They live along the northern border of Iran across Turkmenistan.
They are descendants of Central Asian Turks, who retained their ethnic identity during the Mongol invasion.
They were divided among Iran, Russia and Afghanistan in 1885. Their number in Iran is estimated
to be around the 1 million.
Most follow the Hanafi branch of the Sunni sect of Islam. The have a history of opposition to central governments.
Geographically, the Turkmensahra is situated on the coast of the Caspian Sea lower than the sea level, but
the more we go toward the east the more will be the elevation of mountains, which goes to 3000 meters high.
There are several Turkmen organizations fighting for their rights.
