The Tamu (aka Gurung) are an ethnic group that migrated from mongolia in the 6th century to the central region of Nepal.

There are 544.000 Gurungs/Tamu in Nepal (2.3% of the Nepali Population) of which two-third speak the Gurung language,
a Tibeto-Burman tongue.

Most of them are Budhists (69%), the res it Hindu (29%) and Christian (0.66%).

Their capital and cultural center is the city of Pokhara.

In 2009, the Tamuwan Autonomous State was declared by the Maoists for the Gurung/Tamu people.
To this day it is a concept awaiting final definition.
