A historical province of Portugal located in the northeastern corner of the country. The name: The name — Beyond-the-Mountains reflects isolation of the area, which helped to preserve many ancient customs and traditions.

The Transmontanos are also known for their often plentifull table, usually filled with wine, olive oil, sausage and bread.
In 1998 there was a referendum on the creation of new Administrative Regions.

The proposed region of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro included 31 municipalities, plus Meda from the District of Guarda. The referendum had low participation (less than the required 50% to be mandatory), but the "NO" won anyway and no Administrative Regions were created. The fight for the regional autonomy was carried first by the Cimissao pro-Atuonomia do Nordeste Transmontano -CpANT, then by the MOvimento Autonomista Transmontana-MAT, and now by the Moviemento Alternativo do Nordeste-MAN.
