Description I have gotten so sick and tired of people using my bases after i've worked so hard on them and then get back a link to see poor work. From now on I will be posting this to people who show poor work. I will also post this link on all my bases.

It makes me feel bad that i bust my ass on these bases and get back such bad work, and it makes me feel even more worse when they put under the artist comments:

This isn't my best work. Its kinda messy. But yeah here you go.

Base: [link]
-------------------------
Because seriously? Seriously? Why cant it be your best work!?! I try my hardest on each one of the bases I use. And to see a comment like that breaks my heart.

I think this might help some people realize that Doll/Base makers get pretty pissed off, not when you don't use the base, but the fact that you cant try your best and spend more than 3 minutes on it.

For me it takes me 3 minutes to re-edit a mouth. It's ridiculous that people who make such poor art have the excuse of "I'm not that great at art." Well then why the hell are you on DA? I can understand having favorites, but to post drawings up doesn't make sense if you say you cant draw.

Although if you say "I'm new at this, I'm a bit of a newb" Well thats different. Take this guide and you will hopefully become better.

I did not make this to be mean, i made this to make dollers aware of the base makers emotions and to help them realize that it makes the picture better.

i totally agree with you, i've never made a base (i'm horrible at it) but i use bases a lot, and even before i found out i could save them as PNG (before it was JPG) i had trouble makin them look decent but after i did find out, I got a whole lot better. I always look at the links people give on bases, just to see what other people did and i hate it when i see badly done drawings, like they put no effort into it.
But yes, I do agree and i like that you've decided to do something like this ^^

I read through this and read some comments and I have a question.
What is so wrong with pillow shading? I think it looks nice. =3

pillow shading isn't natural looking, it doesn't have a light source, they just throw in shading where ever. Using a light source and avoiding pillow shading looks 1000 times better...

You can use a light source and pillow shade too, most don't do it
just 'where ever'.

thats pillow shading... (the one labeled pillow shading) if your not doing that, then your not pillow shading... and you can pillow shade with any number of colors, it still looks bad.

Uhh hey just so you know this thing is not completely right on alot of aspects. O.O I don't want to make you mad on this but to alot of dollers you wouldn't be very experienced either... here are some things you could improve on this tutorial.

1) I use the pencil tool to do my dolls, and heck I even use my MOUSE. So saying 'dont use the pencil tool it looks like crap' *mind you im paraphrasing* - isn't really accurate, I dont think using the pencil tool makes ones art look wrong or anything it just takes some practice to use the tools in the program one has chosen to doll in. I'm sure my first dolls weren't very pleasing to the eyes.
2) I think the terms you use are a little vague - from an artist stand point you should say something like "use the difference in lighting from your light source" because not everyone is going to use the same light source and thus some people are going to get that 'pillow shaded' effect. WHICH in the dolling community **which mind you i've been in for 6 going on 7 YEARS now** doesn't mind nearly as bad as no shading at all. Pillow shading means you've tried and have a general idea. And sometimes it just happens, and its okay!
3) Don't assume everyone uses paint when they doll, just say 'hey this is using paint' so that people who dont use it know the difference.

all in all you got some great ideas here, I /might/ be inclined to show some people who are having a hard time dolling and getting them a general idea on how to fix some of their simple things. I love how you mention how to make skin tight clothes look a little better by adding folds and other shadows NOT from the base but your example to show it as being 'better' to me isnt really all that different, it still looks like you've used the base shadowing and then added a little more of your own, and there are folds in many other places on a shirt **look at yourself in the mirror once if you aren't sure where folds go sometime**, as far as shadows from glasses/glass - umm thats not entirely true either I wear glasses myself, depending on the lighting the shadows going to come from the glasses frame or outline of the say cup if they are holding one - and there will be highlights on them yes but not so much as shadows then it wont turn out like glass - you dont see shadows across your window do you?

I see where your coming from in making this, but there are alot of aspects I think that need to be rephrased and worked on yourself. No I'm not trying to be rude, but it gives 'newbies' to the community a bad idea on how they should be doing things and the do's and don'ts of dolling.

Thank you for your response, and dont worry, i get enough criticism on this as it is. So i am used to it. c:

But considering that it is late, i am going to sum up that:
i agree with you completely on this, and this is so old and my style has changed up and advanced that i might have to redo this.

Sorry for not saying as much as you did, but thank you and i appreciate your comment c:

Thanks a lot for what you've done... I actually started dolling to learn how to shade, and I got hooked. I'm not an expert, but I try my best, and I wanted to let you know that some of us aren't believers in 3-minute-art.

By the way, do you have any tips for using a touchpad?

XxDaKoDaWRiGHTxX In reply to ArvenaPeredhel [2010-09-03 00:55:30 +0000 UTC]

That's good that you have gotten something out of this, and I know but to what a lot of people do in there art is worth of what seems like 3 minutes.
All i ask is for people to just try harder.

And personally i never tried to do a serious drawing by touch pad.
I know its possible but it would take A LOT of work.
So if you have a USB mouse hook up, that will defiantly benefit you. Especially if you are a beginner. c:

All i would recommend is putting more variation in the colors for the hair. c: (highlights, lowlights, etc.)

XxDaKoDaWRiGHTxX In reply to ArvenaPeredhel [2010-09-07 03:34:06 +0000 UTC]

Here's a couple of tutorials on hair, its from a pixel artist, but the key is to space it out so it looks more anime (if that's your preference) than pixeled.
But its whatever floats your boat.
Although this is where i got good help. If you couldn't tell by any of my gallery, i used to do a lot of anime, and even though back then i didn't pixel, these helped me MAJORLY. c:

XxDaKoDaWRiGHTxX In reply to OrochiFangirl [2010-07-20 22:11:40 +0000 UTC]

well my advice is that you can look at pictures of models. Not anime.
If you look at real hair styles it will help with understanding how nautral hair looks. start with a few pictures like that and then progress into the fun choppy looks of anime hair. : )
