"Man, that concert was awesome!" James slung an arm around Kendall's neck, who smiled weakly, as they walked towards the Big Time Rush mobile alone. Logan and Carlos had stayed after to do who knows what. Kendall got in the passenger's side and James split, getting in the driver's seat. As they went down the road, James reached over, and turned on the radio which happened to be playing his favorite radio talk show. Kendall wasn't really listening, but watching James laugh, bells ringing in Kendall's ears, watching the wind blow through his hair.

Kendall had been feeling funny around James for awhile now. It started in Minnesota when James pushed him against the wall of the hockey rink and smiled at him…

*flashback*

Kendall and James whirred around the ice on skates, stealing and shooting the hockey puck into each other's goal nets to score. Kendall had the puck now, and he was headed straight for James' net, when a strong force knocked him off balance and into the wall.
"Hey! That's not fair!" Kendall protested.
James took off his helmet and flipped the hair out of his eyes, smiling brightly. Kendall's stomach did flips and he gulped. He couldn't have these feelings for James. He was straight! Wasn't he?
"Let's just say I won and go home, alright?" James asked.
"Okay..." Kendall nodded, and then realized what he had just agreed to. "Wait!..no..that's not fair!"
James laughed, "Too late, I won." He picked up his helmet and skated towards the locker room, leaving Kendall feeling really confused.

Over the next few months, his feelings escalated, and he grew more eager to see the smiling face of James Diamond every morning. They dug at his insides when Gustavo told him that he had no talent, and Kendall blew up. Now they were in LA and James was still as oblivious as ever.

Kendall watched as James turned the radio to another station and started singing along to a song that he obviously knew well. His heart started beating faster and faster, his palms got sweaty, and despite being in a convertible, it was getting hard to breath. He watched James sing and he finally admitted to himself that he was, in fact, in love with his best friend, and he HAD to tell him.

"J-James?" Kendall stuttered.
"Yeah buddy?" James glanced at him and turned down the radio.
"Can you pull over? I-I need to tell you something." Kendall said.
James obeyed and turned to him, "What's on your mind?"
Kendall looked down the road and realized he was being ridiculous. James was gorgeous. He wouldn't love a guy like him. He wasn't even gay, he didn't think. And Kendall had them parked on the side of who knows where, wasting their time, probably. "N-Nothing. It's nothing. Just...nevermind."
"Kendall?" James said.
"Yeah?"
"How long have we known each other?"
"Um...twelve years..."
"And how many times have we lied to each other?"
"Never." Kendall answered softly.
"Right, so why start now? Please tell me, Kendall?" James pouted dramatically and Kendall's heart jumped a little.
Kendall was silent for a moment, hesitating whether or not to tell him. What if James hated him? What if he was a homophobe? He stared into James' eyes, and decided he couldn't hold it in any longer.
"James, I love you…Like, more than you could ever imagine." Kendall closed his eyes and bit his lip, waiting for a punch to the face or harsh rejection. He slowly opened his eyes when James drew in a breath.
"How long?" was all he said, but It was better than what Kendall imagined.
"Well, I-I guess I always have. I just hadn't realized it 'til now." Kendall looked down into his lap. He heard James shift around in his seat, then he felt a warm hand pull his face up. Ivory irises met chocolate ones and James pulled Kendall's head forward, smashing their lips together. Kendall's heart almost leapt out of his head, but James' tongue pushed it back down. They pulled away for air and pressed their foreheads together.
"So I guess I can call you my boyfriend then?" James asked.
"You can call me anything you want, baby." Kendall pecked his lips again.
"By the way, I love you too." James giggled. "And as much as I'd love to sit here and make out with you all night on the side of the highway, we should really get home."
"And we can continue there?" Kendall grinned.
"You know it." James pecked Kendall's lips and turned back to the road, intertwining their fingers tightly.

December-2009

Kendall walked into the Palm Woods lobby, hand in hand with James. He stopped short when he saw a beautiful blonde girl in a baby-blue camisole and daisy-dukes checking in at the front desk. James saw Kendall's expression and looked worriedly at his boyfriend.
"Should we go introduce ourselves?" Kendall asked. James nodded slightly. Kendall dropped his hand and jogged over to the blonde. "H-hi, I'm Kendall Knight. I live in apartment 2J." He grinned gorgeously.
"Jo Taylor." She smiled back.

That's where it started…all the fears in James' mind that Kendall had found someone to replace him. Of course, she couldn't replace James in the band, but she could in Kendall's heart. And eventually, she did.

While Kendall spent warm December days at the pool or arcade with Jo, James spent them in their shared room. Ever since Kendall had deemed them "just friends" to go out with Jo, he only came out to eat. His eyes were red and puffy from crying, there were dark circles underneath from lack of sleep, and his hair was limp and greasy from days spent without a shower. He didn't care anymore about what people thought of him. He only cared about Kendall and what was "never going to happen again." James was falling apart, so everyone was surprised when he walked out of his room, showered and looking like himself again.
"What's going on?" Logan asked.
"I'm going to try to convince him to take me back." James answered with fake-confidence.
"Uhh…James…" Logan started.
"It's worth a try…Kendall's worth a million tries." With that, James turned and left.

Kendall strolled into his and James' shared bedroom and turned on the light. His blonde head tilted in confusion when he saw no James, but a bouquet of red roses on his bed. There was a note tied to the stems.
It read:
"Kendall,
I'm so so sorry for whatever I did to make you not want me anymore. But I still love you so much. Please think about us one more time?
Love, James xoxo"
Kendall rolled his green eyes and sighed. He missed James, he really did, but that was the past. He was with Jo now and he loved her…didn't he? He tossed the roses to the side and flopped down on his bed, growling into his pillow. His phone buzzed and he pressed View.
"meet me @ the pool
love u babe-Jo"
Kendall smiled and got up, walking out the door, flipping off the lights, and leaving the forgotten roses to die.

James walked into the bedroom and flipped on the lights. He smiled when he saw that the roses were gone. Obviously, Kendall had gotten them. But that beautiful and hopeful smile was quickly wiped off his face when he saw them on the ground. James sat on the floor and just cried…

Months passed and James was slowly getting better, although he was still broken. Jo eventually broke up with Kendall for the new guy, Jett. It tore Kendall to pieces, but he got over it, although he couldn't deny the funny feeling he still got around James at rehearsal, dinner, dance practice, harmonies, and even when he walked into the room. It was like the room lit up whenever he walked in, and it became brighter when he smiled, blinding when he laughed. James held Kendall as he cried one night, in the middle of September, over the anniversary of his dad's death. James wanted nothing more than to kiss him and make it all okay again, even for a little while.

James sat in his room, reading the latest Men's Fashion when his phone buzzed. His heart leapt when Kendall's name showed up on the screen. He hit View.
"James,
meet me @ Starbucks

James jumped up and ran out of the apartment. He ran all the way to the Starbucks four blocks away. He found Kendall sitting in a booth by the window.
"Hey," he said and sat down.
"Hey," Kendall smiled weakly, "How are you?"
"You told me to come all the way to Starbucks, four blocks away from the Palm Woods, to ask how I was doing?" James sighed.
"Not really…" Kendall looked at his hands and James was immediately reminded of that day in the car; the day Kendall told him he loved him.
"So, what did you bring me here for?"
"I miss you, Jamie." Kendall admitted. James' heart sunk at his old nickname that Kendall made for him in the second grade. "I miss your tan skin, your sweet sweet smile. You were so good to me. It felt so right. You gave me all your love and all I gave you was goodbye. You gave me roses and I left them there to die. Maybe this is wishful thinking, probably mindless dreaming. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm sorry. I love you, Jamie. But if the chain is on your door, I understand. I'm just…" Kendall shut up when James pressed his lips to Kendall's and put their foreheads together, smiling brightly.
"If I could go back to December and change my mind, I would have never left you, Jamie. I'm so so sorry." Kendall whispered.
James chuckled, "I forgive you."
"Wait, does this mean we're…" Kendall started.
"Boyfriends." James nodded, confirming it. They pressed their lips together again, possessively.
