Ichiro finds himself naturally at ease when meeting people and making friends. When seeing a new face, it isn’t strange for him to come up and approach them, due to his sociable nature. Originally born in Hawaii, Ichiro has loved the ocean ever since he could remember. Both his parents met in the resort business in Kapalua, worked alongside each other for a couple of years before settling down. His mother originally from Chiba and his father from Pearl City, Ichiro was raised in a mixed culture household. His early childhood was normal enough, going to the beach daily, playing outside, and taking surfing lessons (thanks to the resort’s surf instructor). Ichiro’s personality allowed him to befriend a bunch of other kids, and he could never see himself leaving that island. For him, this was truly home.

Well, much to his dismay, Ichiro’s mom always knew they’d move back to Japan at some point. When? It wasn’t clear until a job promotion for both her and her husband came into the picture. The resort was opening another location in Ichinomiya, and they both were up for the jobs. Moved up to managing director and creative director, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to further immerse Ichiro in his Japanese heritage. Also, after their second child, the extra income seemed to suit them perfectly.

Packing up their bags, the Gushiken family arrived at their new home. At the age of 7, Ichiro was the new kid in town. Despite his outgoing personality, there was a small insecurity about his accent when speaking Japanese. It was logical he was homesick, and a little intimidated all because he was in an unfamiliar country. But, after a couple of days, he found a group of kids surfing on the beach. Well, after that, he began to fit in quite easily. Any time he could, he’d go out with his group of friends to catch some waves. This is when he also picked up his other hobbies, such as longboarding and hiking.

As his childhood progressed in Ichinomiya, his wholesome childhood treated him well. He was an outdoor kid, a caring older brother, and an average student. He got decent grades, nothing spectacular. Most of his focus was on the beach, and he found some problems with focusing. With the help of his friends and a study group they formed, Ichiro managed well enough through elementary and middle school. His sister, Atsuko, on the other hand, was more academically inclined and showed much more promise in school. She already had a set hobby and goal in life, and her grades made her a favorite among the teachers. Often both siblings would get compared, but both were also applauded for their friendly nature overall. This difference, however, didn’t escape Ichiro. His insecurities about his academic life and future weighed on him little by little when entering high school.

As a first-year student of Kairyou High, Ichiro enrolled in his clubs and found himself with the same circle of friends. As his classes got more challenging, and the looming prospect of graduation came closer with every year, Ichiro found himself nervous about his future, something he had never felt before. It was intimidating. To the public, Ichiro was still his carefree and relaxed self, despite being stressed about his future and abilities. Now, as a 3rd-year student, he often stays up late, researching what universities and careers would suit him best. The advice from his father often rings in his head, pushing him to find a sustainable and well-paying profession, just like him.
