Suzuran is a passionate individual who values her own ideals strongly while seeking to become a stronger shinobi. She is firm in upholding her beliefs and own set of conduct , which is why she can seem naive and idealistic for a ninja. Suzuran is also very vocal and frank about her opinions on matters and doesn’t hesitate to give her two cents when asked. As such, she can come off as tactless, but in reality, Suzuran is just honest to a fault and prefers painful truths over lies. There are times that this passion of hers, coupled with her hot-headedness, causes her to get into a lot of troubles and arguments.

Growing up, Suzuran is often told that her personality is horribly incompatible with her desired future occupation. She is loud , crass, flashy, and has the subtlety of a burning firetruck. To her foster father's exasperation as well, she is a warm and caring individual who cares far too much and makes it a point to see the best in everyone.To top it all off, she proudly wears her heart on her sleeve and acts mostly on emotion and instinct, and her father worries that her compassion may be her downfall in the future.

In addition, Suzuran also has a tendency to hype up her abilities and put on a face of bravado in front of others. She appears fearless or reckless -- depending on who you ask -- on missions she is tasked to do. More often than not, she'll just face an opponent head on while purely relying on her instinct. However when the situation requires it, Suzuran is capable of forming tactics to counter her enemies but simply prefers not to as she feels that it only complicates matters. But despite that , Suzuran is a very competent ninja (sans flashiness) who takes her tasks seriously and will not hesitate to kill when necessary.

But Suzuran is also not without her secrets. While she is very forthcoming about her past and feelings, she has a lot of insecurities that she hides and prefers not to discuss with anyone, hiding it under her mask of cheeky and reckless behavior. Much to her embarrassment as well, she is easily brought to tears and is very clumsy at hiding that fact.

History

.::THE PAST::.

Suzuran was born to a daimyo named Suisei and his wife Chiyome. She was born during an unfortunate time and on unfortunate circumstances. It was a time of political unrest and her mother, Chiyome, was accused of treason due to an alleged attempt at leading a coup d’état to usurp Suisei’s position. Nobody ever knew if this was true or not but nonetheless , many assassination attempts occurred on behalf of the daimyo , which were all successfully thwarted and diverted by one of the daimyo's retainers , a shinobi by the name of Yoshitsune.

Yoshitsune came from a highly prolific ninja village and was lauded as one of the strongest shinobi of his time. He was very loyal to his liege Chiyome and stopped at nothing to assure her safety. However , his orders to protect Chiyome were suddenly rescinded and his daimyo ordered him to assassinate Chiyome, as a twisted way to test Yoshitsune's loyalty to the daimyo. After all , what better way to test a retainer’s loyalty than to have him execute his own childhood friend?

Yoshitsune was torn. Would he honor his duty? Or would he honor his friendship?

But it was useless to ask. Yoshitsune already knew what he would choose .

He chose honor.

And so Yoshitsune chose a quick and painless way to kill Suzuran’s mother – poisoning. At the night of Chiyome's murder , Yoshitsune placed the poision in her meal and silently waited for her to persih . However Chiyome was a very clever woman and knew what the shinobi was up to. So before eating her final meal, she assured him that she forgave him and that he didn't need to live in guilt once he carried out his orders. He would always be her friend to the bitter end no matter the outcome of their lives.While she did not live with any regrets, Chiyome expressed fear and uncertainty for her daughter's future and begged the retainer to make sure that Suzuran (who was barely a year old at the time) lived a free life.

At the last moment Yoshitsune realized that he was a fool for choosing his honor over his friendship and tried to come up with a plan that would save his friend and her daughter . But it was far too late as Chiyome had already accepted her fate and ate her dinner laced with poison. So with a grief-stricken heart, Yoshitune carried out his friend's final favor and smuggled Suzuran to a safe location, after setting fire to the house the mother and daughter had once lived in, staging it as if it were all just an accident.

Unable to cope with what he had done , Yoshitsune retired from being a shinobi and began wandering across Hoshido , all the while raising a young Suzuran.

.::CHILDHOOD::.

Growing up, Suzuran was told that she was an abandoned and nameless child that a wandering shinobi by the name of Yoshitsune had picked up in a forest. He took her in out of pity and raised her as if she were his own daughter. While he was not the best father figure that she could have had, as he was rather distant and cold at times, he nonetheless did his best to provide for Suzuran and made sure that she was always happy and comfortable.

But Yoshitsune was more than just a father figure to Suzuran, he was her hero and she wanted to be a strong shinobi just like him. So when Suzuran expressed a desire to train under him as a shinobi , Yoshitsune refused. Luckily after much pestering on her part (she was a very persuasive child) , he finally relented to teaching her the arts but only for the sake of protecting herself in the long run. However, the duo did not belong to any ninja village and were constantly wandering so Suzuran’s developing knowledge on skills necessary to be a kunoichi was severely lacking. But the girl didn’t really mind and was content to learn under her only instructor. To both of their surprise, they found that Suzuran took to ninjutsu like a fish took to water. She displayed excellence in learning how to use the various weaponry that was commonly used by nin. Thanks to their lifestyle as wanderers as well, Suzuran flourished as an excellent tracker despite her tendency to quickly grow impatient. While Yoshitsune initially only taught the girl skills necessary to survive in his absence , he eventually realized that not nurturing her talents would be a waste. With great reluctance , he taught her all of the skills and techniques in his arsenal.

.::ADULTHOOD::.

Suzuran lived a fairly uneventful life ; she trained with her father , traveled from place to place without ever settling down, and did the occasional mercenary work when they were strapped for funds. At some point during their travels, Yoshitsune developed an illness that greatly affected his health and after a consultation with the local doctor, Suzuran found out that he did not have much left to live. The woman felt crushed by this revelation but hid it under a facade of smiles. She did her best to take care of her father and ensure his comfort but his illness eventually progressed to a point where getting up from bed was already a big struggle for him. Finally realizing that he would die soon, Yoshitsune finally revealed Suzuran's parentage and how she came to be his foster daughter.

After telling her of her origins, Yoshitsune offered Suzuran his neck as a form of atonement. He told her that his entire life was at her hands and now that she knew the truth, it was time for her to exact her vengeance on all the people who had wronged her, starting from him. It wouldn't amount to much now that he was a dying old man, but Yoshitsune admitted that he was always prepared to die by Suzuran's hands. He also admitted that he always intended for her to live a peaceful life, but once she showed an aptitude for being a shinobi , his plan changed. Instead, he intended to train her so that she would kill him one day , as atonement for his failures. Naturally, Suzuran was horrified at the entire situation and had no intentions of murdering her own foter father! But Yoshitsune was an equally stubborn man (her stubborn nature had to come from somewhere) and persuaded her that if she wasn't going to kill him , then he would at least assist her in murdering her biological father before he died.

To Yoshitsune's surprise however, Suzuran bore no ill will towards him and her biological father. After all, it was difficult to get mad for something that she didn't really recall happening to her. And as far as she was concerned, Suzuran was Yoshitsune's daughter and could not connect herself to the Suzuran that was a daimyo's daughter. It was useless to avenge for something she never really was in the first place. Besides, Yoshitsune saved her. He could’ve left her to rot in some village but instead he raised her , clothed her, fed her, and above all, loved her. Yoshitsune was her father and nothing would ever change that.

She told Yoshitsune that she didn't feel it was necessary but regardless she told him that she forgave him.

After that, bit by bit, Yoshitsune learned how to forgive himself and Suzuran remained by his side to care for him until he finally succumbed to his illness.

Now that her only family and friend had passed, Suzuran's life became aimless and lonely. She was raised as a wanderer and as such the only familial bond she ever had in her entire life was with her father. Without him she was all alone in the world without a place in it. Having nothing else to do, she began travelling once more around Hoshido doing mercenary work here and there to feed herself. But during one of her missions, she stumbled upon a shinobi from Yoshitsune's village -- who recognized her fighting style as familiar. After bringing her back to the village, she was introduced to Yoshitsune's family and she found out that he was branded as a disgrace and was exiled from the village after he left. This angered Suzuran and in an act of recklessness, she declared that she would prove to them that Yoshitsune was not a disgrace as he raised one of the strongest shinobi of this generation -- her.

A few days later, Suzuran would enlist in the Hoshido army. But war is not all about birthrights and conquests, and Suzuran realizes that perhaps glory in war isn't what she should seek for...

TLDR: Suzuran was raised by the shinobi who killed her mother. Said shinobi would eventually get sick and goad Suzuran into killing him for vengeance but Suzuran is too compassionate for that so she ended up taking care of him instead throughout his sickness. Once he passed away, she finds out that he's considered a disgrace in his village so she resolves to become one of the most reknown ninja in Hoshido to clear up his name by gaining glory in war.
