Description [Something's really wrong with this painting... (textured lines appear no matter which scanner I use, even though the paper is totally smooth. So either all the scanners of the world are kaput or... painting scans in weird way...? )]

Medium: Watercolor and Gouache on Wasli (called 'Neem Rang'!)
Time: 1 week!!!!!! (giving 14 hours a day) - O mi God! I'm getting faster!

Yip, that's Lularum and Luc again (I'm obessed with them these days!). One night, in the middle of an experiment, Luc, unintrested in Lularum's works as always, points towards the pretty shooting stars (I'm obsessed with stars too). For once Luarum actually looked, thinking he was showing something incredibly intresting. Needless to say (after the scene in the painting) when she discovered he was only showing her a measly burning star, he did get a huge telling off for breaking her concentration.

A miniature painting, in Persian style, part of a set I was making on star gazing. (I always wanted to combine miniature with manga aaaand... finally, this is the result. Not totally following the traditional schools.)

This is very nice- it looks like it comes out of an illustrated fantasy novel! You can really see a story of some kind here, and want to know more. Thanks for the additional info in the artist's comments.

That's beautiful! And yes, it is a bit flat in places, but, as you've pointed out, that's the style you're aiming for. I really love the colours in the characters; the smooth blending and the way they stand out from their largely monochrome background.

Yip, miniature paintings are pretty flat, 2d like (they almost attimes remind me of the perspective in the old SNES games XD). I'm glad you like the charries, but I do hope they're not jumping out of the monochromatic background too much.

geez.... *could watch shooting stars forever* another of my fun obsessions...so pretty....

anyway, really good job on the characters here - all the shadows are amazing, especially on the clothes - they look so real! (well, real for manga-style anyway... ^^) but yeah, and just with the poses and such, they seem really caught in the moment - very alive.
and really, the lighting/shadows on the whole picture are awesome too - i like the way each brick is shaded, and how the picture darkens up closer to the top.

a few parts - the lantern, the shelves, and some of the papers come across as kinda flat - i think cuz they're seen from straigh on and there's no extra shadows from them or anything. (well, the lantern wouldn't have shadows, but anyway...)

but i do like how the scroll and other papers go off the painted background a little - a small touch but really nice.

amazing work and dedication as always... ^_____^ (Geez...i say that like everytime now...though every time is it true... ^^)

Thanks a lot! ^.^ Especially for the fav!

I really love shooting stars too. It's just that they're so rare to see. I wish I lived in one of those places where you can see each and every star clearly in the sky.

Yep, the racks and the wall line do make it look flat. But there was nothing much I could do about that.

I love the expressions here and as always with the wasli/miniature paintings in particular: the delicate gradient of the shading! I don't even know of anything to compare it to, I can just say I love it very much but... somehow miss all the vivid colors one can see in your other paintings o.O; I mean Lul and Luc really are quite vivid in this picture (even though the colors you chose aren't really vivid themselves... but the end result just makes them stand out anyways ) I just think the background is a bit plain. The room looks a bit empty I dare say, even though the objects you put there are very nice and clean.

I love the idea behind this as well. Always makes me want to know more more and even more about your characters xD

I have some questions though
first, mind telling me what you did in water color here and what in gouache? You know, I've bought some gouache/tempera/whatever-stuff myself and I really want to try and get better with it. But I never seem to be able to get the shading right. Firstly, it's very hard for me to apply the gouache evenly on a bigger area and shading it even deeper becomes even harder... because it doesn't ... how to put this... 'melt' with the paper like water color does... but when you want to apply another layer the goauche becomes soft again and smears all over the painting x_X know what I mean?
I also wonder what is that green thing in Lul's hand? it kinda looks like... maybe a bird wing?

Yep, this painting is a bit bland as compared to my other ones. But that is what Neem (half) Rang (color) is all about, as the name says. In miniature paintings, the 'rough sketches' too were made in paint, though simply in one color, like a simple black watercolor. Neem Rangs are like that too, but 30% is in color - the parts you want to emphasize or bring attention to.

So everything that you see in the dull bluish gray tone is actually watercolor. While the colored bits are gouache (like Lularum, Luc, the alchemical circle, feather, contents of beaker, etc.). The rooms too empty though... When I was drawing it, I couldn't figure out what sort of effect the silly gradiant would have, so I couldn't really think of the amount of emptiness. Does that sound silly? (also because meh friend kept on yipping in the background 'They're poor! An empty room!' >.> )

As for gouache... I know what you mean. When I tried using it in normal paintings, it did melt or stand out too much. That's why I just used it in ceratain parts I wanted it to stand out. In my miniature paintings... welp, I give one flat coat and then I render over it. But the whole painting style is entirely diferent from any other style soooooo..... I don't know if that would help..? (dry brush out till it seems no paint exists. Then paint as if sketching tiny lines in the part you want to shade.. maybe I could explain it better next time we talk?)

ScatterbrainFox In reply to Yakra [2005-06-28 11:22:36 +0000 UTC]

no, the thing about the gradient and the emptiness of the room... kinda makes sense o.O but now at the word gradient I wonder again how one can make such even, clean gradients like at the tiles of the wall ยฐ_ยฐ
hm, I don't really know what I would've put in the background other than big shelves. Well, in theory at least. I would be the best thing I can think of but I would certainly be too lazy to really pull that off

oh, and before I forget it... your scanner might misbehave but it does so in an interesting way xD and I always kept wondering what kind of paper you use because it always seems to have this nice structure รด_O

well...drying the brush out you say? I might try it if I get the chance to in the next 2 weeks xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to ScatterbrainFox [2005-06-29 07:42:52 +0000 UTC]

My scanner's just misbehaving right now. ^.^ (actually its dead now) Usually (atleast in most of the pencil ones) it is the texture of the paper.

And.. erm... wait.... don't go trying the dry brush on your gouache works like that. It's actually a miniature technique, you start shading with a dry brush (it seems like there is is no color) in the lightest tone, until the darks just build up by themselves. It takes very long (Lularum's sleeve took about an hour) and.. erm... I have no clue how it would appear in normal gouache paintings. I'd hate to be responsible for you messing up a gorgeous pic or something.

(I thought of shelves too but it would have looked too much like another painting! I'll put them up when those three are complete.)

ScatterbrainFox In reply to Yakra [2005-06-29 11:42:31 +0000 UTC]

well..... I have no idea how to work with gouache at all, so all I do is practically trying everything that comes to mind... and your miniature technique doesn't sound like you can easily ruin a painting with it.... it just.....sounds like it takes a horribly LONG time x_X so it'S a good thing I like to use gouache only for details xD;

I love how your backgrounds are always so interacting with the picture..XD

heehee..nice stars!! I also like stars. ^-^
teh characters look great! I like the one pointing best! That hair and headband makes him look like some Shaman..XD pretty darn cool ^_^

I like their outfits...! XD I want one too.....>> << >>

and the lil runic circle type thing is nice XD Always love runic type stuff ^^U

It's really funny that you should mention that Luc looks like a shaman in this pic. You're actually the second person to say so, and I never really thought that he did.

anyways, thankee! But meh runic circles come no where near Exarrd's glowing circle awesome-ness!

Miniature and manga...Y'know...I could even consider buying this (If I had the money) I think its a very successful attempt of combining the both...the color schemeing is just awesome...And the amount of time and work you've put into this...whooaaa!

Oohh...so the scanner was responsible for the texture...How silly of me XD

Yakra In reply to merriya [2005-06-27 09:29:49 +0000 UTC]

Heh heh... thanks! ^.^ (You would actually consider buying this...? *ish shocked!* Actually, this will probably be the only one of the 13 which I won't sell [not that any are going to get sold...])

But thanks a lot! I'm glad you don't think it looks like a weird mix of... nothingness. >.< I cannot figure out why the texture appears on all scanners though... so weird....

You're most welcome! Oh as I said before its a lovely blend of miniature and manga, Any fan of both artstyles would love it. Speaking of selling stuff....there was a notice on the college boards yesterday...about a lady interested in miniature paintings :3

My scanner also looves adding its own touches aswell, sometimes I have to scan a picture thrice to get it right

Hey it looks OK!

If you tried to acheve reality - there is some wrong thinks, but i see personal manner of painting. It's your own style after all!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to Serepsa [2005-06-27 09:04:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! ^.^ Welp, its just the style in which miniature paintings are made, objects are made more stylized than normal. But I know it's far from perfect .

dominique871 [2005-06-26 10:49:40 +0000 UTC]

That;s so nice....it really appeals to me, even though I don't know why...I love the colours, the textures, everything.
I love how you positioned them as well even though it seems a bit flat, it's fine cause you said you wanted it to be an egyptian like painting.
Really, this is awesome!!! Keep it up!!!

Yakra In reply to dominique871 [2005-06-27 06:53:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!

Yeah it is pretty flat; that was the main thing that always turned me off from miniature paintings. But that's how the style is, everything is shown in a 2d perspective (and in persian/irani miniatures, they're even more flat and cartoony, with curvy lines - I don't have a demented sense of observation!).

But thanks a lot. ^.^

*drops jaw*...*after 5 minutes of staring and drolling* Oh my god someone submit that as daily deviation or whavere it was called!!
I don`t see why you blame the scanner so much..the art work looks more ancient and defiently breath-taking-jaw-dropping-super-mega-cool ^-^;; The colours are so smooth..I bet it took forever..(1 week!? T_T) I admire your devotion towards your drawinsg and characters!!Few arts are like you T_T
*stares some more* And I like the frame thing and how some sheets and notes go out of it..and of course I love Lularum`s clothes~!She definetly looks like the alchemist type of person..or sage or something o_o!!
And way ya go Luc!I would be staring at the sky too if I was on his place XD
I think Joey would love this work..she too is obssessed with stars ^^!

*runs off to study* x_x

Yakra In reply to Exarrdian [2005-06-27 07:03:21 +0000 UTC]

Eh heh heh heh... it's not as smooth as it should be... *doesn't have the patience...* The thing that I hated about this type of painting was the fact that all of the monotone areas had to be done in watercolours, not gouache. (and getting something smooth by painting, dot dot dot in watercolors is so not fun! Wa! >.<

But I'm glad you like it. I'm actually kind of sick of it by now. Thank you so much!

(The frame is incomplete. There has to be a border (like you could see a bit of in the 'Ruhat-e-Hilal' painting and I have to ink the lines too. *ish lazy*)
