It's really classic anime from 80's and really violent too I used to watch when I was a little kid, around age 6-7 and I still follow the sequel, Ginga Densetsu Weed.
You can find the episodes of Ginga Nagareboshi Gin with English subtiles easily from certain video sites. I don't think there's official English release to it.

You really don't need to watch/read GNG before GDW, since things are explained there pretty well, but it's a good thing if you have seen the original series.

ok, but one last question: does this dog ever die, because... if this is a violent anime...I'd just prefer to know ahead of time but I can't wait to watch anyway ^^ or read...it's also a manga?

The original manga is created by Yoshihiro Takahashi, and it was adapted into anime series. He later continued with Ginga Densetsu Weed (the story about Weed, Gin's son [this dog here]) and nowadays he's doing Ginga Densetsu Weed: Orion manga series about Weed's son, Orion. And Gin is still alive in Orion's story.

Tykkään ihan tajuttomasti, tää on mun ehdoton suosikki sun töistä. Jotenkin näissä kaikissa sun töissä on sellanen vanhan kunnon 80-90 -luvun piirretyn fiilis, johtunee vesivärien taidokkaasta käytöstä. Lisäks vielä persoonallinen tyyli piirtää - ei voi muutaku rakastaa<3

Heh - the one VHS tape I had with Silver actually started with this scene, so I remember this very well, though the whole Iga/Kouga thing completely escaped me, but then I was a little kid. Rather a violent series to be marketed to kids XD
But very lovely picture, the simple colouring works really well with the scratch-shadowing and Silver looks like he should ^^
